The NSW Labor Party has forfeited a $100,000 political donation as its barrister conceded at a corruption inquiry that "a lot of alternative facts and nonsense" had been put forward about its true source.
Former NSW Labor general secretary .Jamie Clements, Chinese billionaire Huang Xiangmo and former Labor MP Ernest Wong.The watchdog is investigating whether the true source of the cash was Chinese billionaire Huang Xiangmo, then a director and chairman of property development company Yuhu Group, and the donation was orchestrated by Labor figures including former MP Ernest Wong.
The ICAC has heard evidence that 12 straw donors were used to mask the source of the money, including from members of the Chinese community who admitted that they had agreed to sign false donations declarations. He said that NSW Labor and Country Labor had written to the NSW Electoral Commission last week and said it would forfeit the $100,000, which had been held by Perpetual Trustees pending the outcome of the inquiry.The Electoral Commission confirmed yesterday that the funds had been received.
