Western Australia is set to become the second state to legalise voluntary euthanasia after proposed laws allowing terminally ill people to end their own lives pass the Upper House.

The Government had insisted the legislation was sound and did not need amending when it came to the Upper House.

It has dismissed most of the changes as inconsequential and not impacting the operation or the integrity of the bill. The Premier did not hide the fact the Government agreed to the amendments, including some of its own, for political expediency to ensure the passage of the bill."The amendments that we passed, we made a judgment on every single one of them as to whether they'd make the bill better, did they do any harm to the bill, and we applied that judgment to every single amendment that came before us," she said.

About time

At last, Australian politics are STARTING to catch up with the rest of the world.

yGrael I feel the huge sense of relief. And the freedom to really investigate alternatives now

'Bouy fk time!

It's only controversial to a few. The majority have, for a long time, seen the sense in a regulated system to offer people the choice of avoiding immense suffering. This is an excellent outcome.

Crippled legislation but at least it's something. Might still have to buy that ticket to Switzerland.

Only positive news that I have read today Better late than never. This is civilised maturity. I seldom praise the pollies but well done. The lobbyists pushing this must all be saints. Just another population control device to be implemented and abused when necessary by self interested individuals who may financially benefit earlier than hoped. The rules will be relaxed overtime to accommodate all sorts of reasons to assist early exits.

WA likely to pass voluntary euthanasia laws within days after debate breakthroughThe West Australian Parliament looks set to legalise voluntaryeuthanasia within days, with MPs expected to strongly back the bill. dignityindying Getting there 👍 one by one when those in power realise it could happen to anyone. There's neither justice nor honour in unnecessary suffering. More like 'The disposal of inconveniently expensive and slowing dying people laws.' The doctrine of double effect means that such laws for killing people are entirely unnecessary, they simply save money. Proper palliative care does work. dignityindying Well done and not before time
