Blackman had spent years battling an aggressive form of skin cancer that was first diagnosed in 2018. He said at the timethe carcinoma on his face, which eventually resulted in the removal of his jaw and its replacement with bone taken from his thigh, would end his career.
Blackman was living in Sydney at the time, and would provide his live comments from the studios of that city’s TCN-9. A skit on the talent show segment Red Faces, in which a bunch of performers appeared in back face as The Jackson Jive, outraged guest judge Harry Connick Jr. The same five performers had appeared on the show 20 years earlier with the same act, winning the segment.
