Victoria n opposition leader calls Andrew Thorburn’s resignation as Essendon CEO ‘ridiculous’

Matthew Guy criticises debate that led to resignation, after premier says church’s views were ‘appalling’

The football club on Tuesday said Thorburn felt he could not serve in both roles and had offered his resignation, despite not holding the same personal views as his church. On Wednesday, the opposition leader criticised the premier for weighing in to the debate, which he said encroached too far into private religious views.

“What are we now banning people from going to church, banning people from going to a synagogue, banning people from going to a mosque? Where have we got? This is ridiculous,” Guy told 3AW radio.“Football clubs can hire who they choose. I don’t see, if I was the premier, why I would be telling people who they can hire and fire; why would you?”

A teacher cannot teach in a Catholic school or Christian school without practising that religion. You can't have it both ways. Mr guy appears to be a little man with a tiny mind……. Er, That’s about it…! A CEO belonging to an anti guy church is not the right person to represent an AFL Club Did the opposition leader think that when he got rid of bernie finn

Matthew Guy, still out of touch. Does this man wish to condemn himself to eternal opposition! Loser What does he say about the deputy president of the Vic Liberals resigning? little guysie would get the lead role in lost in space I think how king arthur treated Lancelot just for giving guinevere a sly knee trembler was ridiculous. What do you think Matt..you being a king arthur devotee

How about Mathew Guy hire Mr Thorburn? I believe there’s some vacancies in his team! Well, Guy had no issue having dinner with an Organized Crime Figure, so we know he has set the bar very low. Truth is, Thorburn's ties to a weird Pentacostal Cult bothers me far less than the crooked s**t he got up to as the head of NAB.

Pentos circling the wagons. Should Waleed Ali be sacked from Channel TEN because he believes that homosexuality is a sin? Given Thorburn’s religious background I’m surprised he’s not running for LNP preselection in Victoria. Being Victorian is a great redpill on democracy. Rocked into work & bounced after the 1st shift

Pity we can't also get rid of politicians who are homophobic and against women's rights to choose. LiberalVictoria is becoming a right-wing church. DoBetter If the Victorian Labor Party were to offer 'Matt' the opportunity to take over as Premier, on the condition he had to follow the Labor party policy platform at all times, how does he feel that would go?

Victorian Liberals beset by more departures ahead of election Victoria ’s Liberal leader Matthew Guy says he has “no idea” why another key figure has left the party so close to the state election. Clowns Unless the LiberalAus run a campaign pointing out how they’ll kill less Victorians than labor they’re no chance. All the Victorians that left the state were their base. Any good democracy needs a good opposition, they've long been an inadequate opposition hence why Victoria has a supreme leader

M-Guy is an expert on ridiculous. I mean fact check on what's actually ridiculous - The Victorian Liberal parties' social media 'content'. But yes continue. Liberals really thought keeping the guy who failed last time would work this time. Andrews has alot to answer for but Guy will lose his side the election rather than Andrews winning it at this rate.

Disagree, it was entirely sensible- especially given how bad the culture in the AFL aleady is Matthew Guy again out of touch with corporate values. Doesn't surprise me since he stands for nothing. What he's saying is he supports having a CEO of a football club hating on gay people. If you were trying to figure out why the line in Victoria are way behind Labor in the polls, in spite of all of Andrew’s screw up , here it is. Guy has no idea.

well Matthew Guy is an expert on the ridiculous😂 but seriously.... any individual who thinks their contribution to any organisation should include their religious zealotry by persecuting and marginalising other members of the community should be called out... let alone employed Guess that’s Matthew Guy nailed his colours to the mast, making it clear that nobody should vote Liberal if they aren’t into enabling the further spread and platforming of religious bigotry.

I find it ridiculous that this Matthew Guy, who was very keen to play the ' African Gangs ' race card at the last election somehow gets another go in the top job. But what are you going to do?

Time for Vic Liberals to do a ‘last-minute U-turn’ on some of their ‘ludicrous’ policiesSky News host Rita Panahi says the Victoria n Liberals are a group that has “abandoned any notions” of being a centre-right Opposition to the far-left Andrews government. “Instead of fighting the election on Labor's reckless energy policies that will see costs skyrocket further, the Libs have signed up to radical emission cuts,” Ms Panahi said. “Instead of formulating sensible policies that clearly differentiate the Liberals from Labor, they are, right now, an echo. “It's time for the Victoria n Liberals and for Matthew Guy to nuke their TikTok accounts and do a last-minute U-turn on some of their more ludicrous policies and give Victoria ns a real choice at the ballot box.” You think Andrews is far left!!! This may be the problem here! Lolz … far left ffs 😂 Surely SkyNews has worked-out that Corporate Australia owns the major parties and therefore any policy differences are merely cosmetic. In effect, the electorate votes for a PM/Premier with the least offensive personality, and that’s about it. ‘Democracy’ is BS.

I would expect nothing less from a member of a party riddled with homophobes.

“But at the end of the day, who organisations – external of government – hire and fire is up to them, and I just don’t see why politicians, particularly the premier, have to be an overlord or commentator on everyone else’s organisation. “What are we now banning people from going to church, banning people from going to a synagogue, banning people from going to a mosque? I don’t see, if I was the premier, why I would be telling people who they can hire and fire; why would you?” On Tuesday, Andrews said the appointment of the CEO was a matter for Essendon, but criticised the views of the church. But I was asked a question and I simply put to you my longstanding, consistent view,” Andrews said. It’s not a campaign staff issue so I don’t intervene with the operation of the secretary. “I’ve had a longstanding view that termination services are a private matter between a woman and her doctor and I will speak out against people who seek to intrude on that. Responding to Guy’s criticism, Andrews said on Wednesday he had simply answered a question and had been a long-standing supporter of LGBTQ+ and abortion rights.
