Victorian Acting Premier James Merlino has written to the federal government seeking approval for a proposal that would allow international students to return.

Victoria has revised its plan to return international students, actors and other foreign economic migrants to the state under a separate hotel quarantine scheme.

Users of the system including universities, stage and screen productions and major events groups would foot the bill, which would be"over and above" the $3000 hotel quarantine fee for returning Australian adults. "We've always said that we would work to welcome back international students when it is safe and reasonable to do so," Mr Merlino said in a statement.

"We believe we've acquitted all of the Commonwealth's requirements to establish a dedicated economic stream so we look forward to their consideration and approval of this proposal."The Victorian government in March announced its rebooted hotel quarantine program would put aside 120 additional places for economic cohorts once it scaled up to 1120 returned travellers a week.

So Vic Labor govt will bring in international students into a hotel quarantine system while at the same time the WA Labor is cutting returning Australians by 500 per week while Federally the Labor Party is demanding more be done to help Australians trapped in India get home!!!

Always chasing the money

But sadly, not stranded Australians. Prime Minister, tell James Merlino on behalf of Victorians, ‘no’.

Too soon

No thanks. Victorian government can't be trusted aside from clearing our 800 aged care beds

If we really didn’t like it and complained properly they would stop (like the failed Euro Super League) But Aussies are too soft and compliant....

Surely the first priority should be to get stranded citizens home, not students. Get the hotel quarantine right, and get those who want to come home, home.

SBS This is crap. They will be in a subpar hotel quarantine acting like uni students. This will be a disaster for Victorian's who have suffered enough in this pandemic. Let's get Australian citizens in first. It's all about $$$$

What about all those poor Australians that can’t return home? 🤷‍♂️

This is nothing but a money grab... Sorry but no international students, as from what I heard this morning they are coming from covid hotspots.. and yes India is one country.. FFS we cannot even get our own vaccine program going properly..

Their masters in the Population property ponzi must be served

I hope JamesMerlinoMP seeks clarity about why some universities are issuing deeds to assign intellectual property rights. This is misconduct. It’s not gratis. You need to reward talent. ScottMorrisonMP JoshFrydenberg MarisePayne dfat AusHCUK

Is this risk worth taking?

What about our own citizens still trapped overseas.... No wonder they take you to the UN

Immigration Ponzi scheme rebooting in 3, 2, 1...

No dice!

The low rent was good while it lasted

This is absurd, it's time the vulture capitalists shut up and wait until vaccinations are sorted.

If C'wealth govt invested in pt/public partnership for quarantine facilities in good, very lovely locations then built well they could be repurposed for tourism afterwards. Serving two purposes in the immediate and longer term.

Get Aussies home: NSW challenges other states to take more international arrivalsNSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has challenged other states to take more international arrivals as new figures show Victoria is lagging far behind the others in bringing Australians home from overseas Just go away. Thank you. Look after your state and don't poke into other states. It’s a fair enough comment. I’m a bit over those who expect NSW to keep bearing the burden for the whole country while being ready to pounce and close borders if there is ever a leak. It’s time the other states (and the feds) stepped up and did more. Notable exception is NT.
