Victoria moves to decriminalise public drunkenness on the eve of a coronial inquest into the death of Aboriginal woman Tanya Day, who suffered head injuries in a police cell in 2017.

Victoria will finally abolish one of its most contentious and outdated laws by decriminalising public drunkenness. The move was recommended in 1991 by the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in CustodyVictoria has lagged behind other states in making the reform

Victoria's Attorney-General, Jill Hennessy, said the law reform would be implemented over the next few months.

I agree with her children, if she was that intoxicated she should of been taken to the hospital first where it wouldve been less likely for her to able to harm herself. I think itd be good to amend this law

Sounds fine, but was anybody prosecuted in relation to the death? If not are we simply pronouncing the police racist? And perhaps some root cause analysis (why was she drunk on a train) to address alcohol issues.

Indigenous peoples are sadly over represented in a lot of negative statistics. At least when anyone comes into Police custody there is an opportunity for early intervention.

Rubbish

Only took 18 years to implement after a royal commission recommends 👏🙄

Does this equate to... if you can't beat em, join em?

Shame same Victoria!! What’s the criminal charge for death in custody?!
