A man who strangled to death a Cooktown woman in a botched extortion bid has been sentenced to life behind bars after pleading guilty mid-way through his murder trial.
Matthew Ross White, 27, had pleaded not guilty to killing Donna Steele but changed his plea late yesterday — on day two of his trial — after prosecutors played to the jury a video of him confessing. White said in the recording that he drove from his home in Cairns to Cooktown to extort money from a drug syndicate he believed was loosely connected to Ms Steele."I had a piece of string and I was trying to choke her," he said.
"The string wasn't working so I grabbed a scarf and started using that. She eventually stopped moving." White wrapped Ms Stelle's body in a doona and dragged her to the car before dumping her body in crocodile-infested waters in an offshoot of the Endeavour River.
