Victoria has recorded its biggest single-day increase in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, as the state government ushers in new on-the-spot fines for those flouting health directives in a bid to curb its spread

Premier Daniel Andrews said at a press conference on Saturday morning that people would not be slugged with a fine for being closer than 1.5 metres together.

"If you need to go for a walk, exercise, great, but this is not about spending a day at the beach," Ms Neville said.Loading With the mandatory 14-day self-isolation in hotels of all overseas travellers to Australia starting at 11.59pm on Saturday, more than 26,000 rooms have been offered by hotels to house the quarantining Australians returning from overseas.

Its time to lock it down

If we are not going into lock down you must have enough ventilators for everyone?

Shut it down! Some selfish people returning from overseas are part of our problem.

About the right period since the GP disaster! 11000 congregating to get in the gates, while Andrews refused to close it down, DESPITE wide spread expert and Federal advice.

This covid19 will give Australia a big thrashing.

Stage 3 Chairman Andrews

Shut everything down!!!! People just aren’t heeding the warnings!

Start with Coles supermarkets. No one social distancing there also more than the accepted amount of people per square foot in one space. I noticed Aldi were only letting in certain amount of people at any given time. Shame on Coles . Money before people.

Does anyone know the population of Victoria, if not here we go., it's 6.6 million pple and about 5 million of them are bush fire affected

Surprise, surprise. And it will get worse. Much worse. Guaranteed! How do I know with such certainty? The governments own data, which they don’t seem to understand:

Why aren’t the states showing unity on freezing mortgages and not evicting tenants from their homes.. why can’t you all arrive at the same belief that if there was ever a time for unity it is now

Shame they didn’t fine all the irresponsible people who flocked to the beach any number of people will get coronavirus from them. Who knows how many will die? Why do the wheels of government move so slowly? Even in a life or death crisis?

DanielAndrewsMP lock Victorians down please. Its getting worse. My family & I do not want to be cases of this coronavirus

Testing did start very late compared to NSW........obviously they wanted to get the Grand Prix over the line. McLaren threw a spanner in the works though.

No one gets fined. All you need to do is say 'sorry didn't know' and you get off with it

He needs to stop asking people to stay home he has to TELL people Lock the place down now.

Can we please lock VIC down There are too many cases and I don’t want to think about how bad it’s going to be in four weeks time!

Victorians 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻... should harder...😡😡😡😡.

More fucking fines

Shut down. Sinful, but simple and the only realistic solution left. Should have listened to other voices earlier. Now, just do it!

fine those that can afford A fine $$'s are just fine with money punishment Confine is more to the point & robo debt on a wealth scale $1,000 fine to lowest paid is bankrupting $1,000 fine to a Returned Ambassador is sweet bugger all & no sweat. unless fully infected

It seems our pollies are not listening to public sentiment. They forget that we,the public, employ them & it seems that we,the public, want a total lockdown

How can a telephone call by the police establish that someone is home? Do the police have access to surveillance technology?

You hv plenty of time to act to contain the virus but you choose to take it easy and think it wouldn’t effect you much. Most of the cases were imported frm people who travelled to US & cruiseship, you failed to quarantine them, shut the borders not only frm air but sea!

Place curfew now or it will get worse

*Victoria recorded a rise in cases two weeks ago when these people actually contracted the virus. But were only tested one week ago if they were lucky.

Make the fines proportional to the wealth or rich fucks will ignore it. Will ignore it anyway.

Context would be appreciated by those dictating these updates to us. This increase is not from infections occurring overnight. These were pending tests. Which makes sense especially given number of returning travellers after travel ban restrictions were tightened.

Updates, given at airports.. with planes landing.. won't be listened to by the public.. it's too loud and you can't hear the speaker talking. What a waste of time.

That's because of 'Super Silent Spreaders'... that's how it spreads.. people look fine.. but they are loaded with the virus.. and then it goes sky high.. No secret here.. We've had plenty of countries to see this.. We had plenty of time to shut the airports.. to close travel.

And the parks are packed with sunbathers. This is ridiculous!

DanielAndrewsMP covid19australia please do fine them, not just give them a warning. Those selfish people usually find any excuse they could and avoid the fine. How many times Dan and others says do not go to the beach. They were still did yesterday without any social distancing

and it will just keep increasing

Lock it down DanielAndrewsMP that includes contraction we are human too

Bah, what a joke. They've been threatening total shutdown for weeks now. Andrew's said he 'won't hesitate' to shut us down, but that's all he's been doing for weeks! Shame on you DanielAndrewsMP and VictorianCHO

And just ~20 people in hospital.. a week ago it was 7 people in hospital.. this lockdown is crazy

And it’ll continue to go up until we do a total shutdown. I drive all over Melbourne and it looks like a normal day with the amount of traffic. Still a lot of people walking around.

Are they going to throw the handcuffs at them.. Letting out prisoners yet then wanna arrest others.. Hypocrisy And they shouldn’t. It’s hard enough dealing with every day policing nevertheless dealing with idiots that completely disregard the simple elements of isolation. Heavier fines and harsher jail sentences should be handed down. This is not a joke anymore Yeah... that's going to help in a recession.
