Festivals, concerts and sporting events are all affected by the government's ban on 'non-essential' gatherings, but organisers are confused about the rules

Concert organisers and theatre producers have expressed confusion over the federal government's effective ban on public gatherings of more than 500 people, as various sporting codes prepare to lock out fans and play in front of empty stadiums after the weekend.that will come into effect from Monday, restricting "non-essential" mass gatherings to less than 500 people and forcing a slew of cancellations to festivals, concerts and theatre productions.

The Sydney Writers' Festival, due to kick off in April, has suspended ticket sales following the government's advice. Musician and comedian Tim Minchin's national tour has been postponed following his Friday night performance in Hobart. Theatrical producers are considering whether they can limit the capacity of their venues to 500 in order to keep the shows going, while the touring industry is on the back foot with promoters refusing to say whether large concerts scheduled for next week and into the future would go ahead.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said fans will be welcome to attend this weekend's matches which will be played in front of crowds, before "stadiums will be closed to fans" next weekend. Mr Morrison said he planned to attend the Cronulla Sharks match on Saturday evening. "We need information around the timeframe, how long is this limit cancelling mass gatherings going to stay in place for? What other conditions are they putting around that?"
