Italy has declared a state of emergency in Venice after the city was hit with its worst flooding in more than 50 years.

Much of the Italian tourist attraction is under water after "apocalyptic" floods swept through the city, flooding its historic basilica and inundating squares and century-old buildings.

The emergency declaration has been approved at a cabinet meeting held by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte where the first measures aimed at helping the city's recovery were agreed. Image: AP
