A van fire on the M8 motorway in Sydney has closed several major thoroughfares causing major traffic delays. The M8 Tunnel is closed in both directions because of the van fire in the westbound tunnel at Tempe, in Sydney ’s inner west. The M8 is closed eastbound between the M5 East and St Peters, and westbound between Rozelle and St Peters. The M4 and Rozelle Interchange are also closed westbound.
The centre said traffic was backed-up in all directions. “Motorists should continue to avoid the area and use alternative routes,” NSW Transport Management said.“Motorists already in the area should follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews on site.” Fire and Rescue NSW said it was called to the van fire in the M8 tunnel about 200m from the St Peters Interchange exit at 8.08am. The driver of the van evacuated the vehicle and the tunnel’s automated sprinklers turned on.
