A COVID-19 vaccine is just months away, Dr Anthony Fauci says, but vaccine hesitancy and political division are making the fight against the virus tougher to win

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.America's top infectious disease expert predicts the world will have a coronavirus vaccine "in the next few months", but says people are unlikely to be able to go about their normal lives until at least the end of next year.

Speaking from his US home as part of a University of Melbourne webinar, Dr Fauci – recently called an idiot by President Donald Trump – said scientists must never be afraid to tell politicians what they don't want to hear. Professor Sharon Lewin, director of the Peter Doherty Institute, who also spoke at the webinar, said Australian data showed about 20 to 30 per cent of Australians may be hesitant to have a COVID-19 vaccine.

"So the target population is a little bit different to how we think about, say, the measles vaccine, where we want to vaccine absolutely everyone."
