The explanation as to why bites are on the up is a simple one. 9News

"The last two years' numbers were probably lower due to COVID-19, in that there were less people in the water," Dr Lowe told 9news.com.au."We're only getting one side of the story."The majority of unprovoked attacks occurred in the US, which saw 47 bites, followed by Australia where 12 bites were clocked.

Australia had the highest number of fatal attacks with three deaths recorded, while the US, Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa had just one unprovoked fatal shark attack.Dr Lowe said the migratory population of Blacktip sharks is likely responsible for bites there.Increasing great white population 'no cause for concern'But the latest data comes as experts report an increase in a juvenile great white population in both California and New Zealand.

Dr Lowe said this should not be a cause for concern for ocean-goers and could ultimately work in humans' favour. "I would argue the increase is not related to that," he said, hypothesising an increase in younger sharks around humans could make them more comfortable with us, and thus less likely to take a bite.Last year drone operator Scott Fairchild snapped a young great white near a surfing child in San Diego. The pair regarded each other with curiosity before the shark swam away.

This includes: the protection of the species, the banning of gill nets in fishing, and a very healthy seal population.
