Here's why Australia is offering LNG to Europe amid fears of Russia n invasion of Ukraine

Australia offers to provide liquefied natural gas to 'friends and allies' in Europe , should Moscow decide to cut off energy supplies in light of Ukraine tensions.

Even before the 2014 hostilities, Moscow had launched efforts to diversify gas supply routes to the European Union, saying the Ukrainian system was dilapidated and accusing the country of siphoning gas.Norway, among Europe's suppliers, has stepped up with more pipeline gas.

Australia should not be fracking and should not be exporting gas to support overconsumption / overdevelopment. The article’s heading is all wrong to start with …how can Australian govt offer LNG when it doesn’t own it. It would have to buy it at market price and then offer it, as if that is likely to happen. Utter shite article, misleading

So it's not the Gov't offering - it's the Gas Companies and the Gov't is riding the coattails for the glory. because europe needs a war $$$$ “Australia” ie the international LNG frackmeisters have “offered” to export more methane to Europe in light of Ukraine tensions. Because they are trying to steal Gazprom’s market for pipeline gas v”

Like all LNG plants in Aus, Inpex doesnt have spare capacity, they are waiting for Barossa to come on line. I think the Federal Gov are making things up again and making promises they cant fulfil so they can be the saviour they think they are. AusPol2022 Aus doesnt produce LNG, Japanese Gov (Inpex), Santos/Kuwait (Gladstone), Chevron (Wheatstone) produce LNG and pay Aus a pittance. Buy it on open market? There's no capacity to be sold, it all goes to owners of processing plants because they built them. Not Aus Gov. AusPol2022

'Low gas supplies'. That's called peak gas AngusTaylorMP DanTehanWannon keithjpitt That will happen in Australia, too. The more LNG exports, the earlier it will come. tony_r_wood, AlanKohler latingle kirby_journo Let's talk about everything except how this situation came about. auspol Ukraine

Does no one think of world peace at this time? Distraction 301: Trinkets & Baubels... Go read Fauci's emails which were outed last week - then you may view this somewhat differently... Honestly can't believe Europeans would allow themselves to be beholden to Russia for essentials like fuel. Putin is a proven psychopath in my view.

Excellent. Europe can pressure demented kleptocrat warmonger Putin to back off knowing they will have a regular supply of gas. All Russia produces is fossil fuels and war machines so it will be a big punch to the guts. Another brain fart. Its 6 weeks sailing once you get ships. Then the logistics of ship to shore. There's going to be lots of cold people. for oh 3 months

🤣 we are importing gas I can’t wait to read a thorough in-depth analysis on US hegemony. Is this one written by a lobbyist for the weapons manufacturers or just an oil company? Focused Russian attack on Ukraine seen as more likely than full-scale invasionOfficials and experts say several elements missing for full-scale invasion despite recent troop movements Oh bollocks! If Ukraine attacks the Donbass breakaway region, Russia will use air and artillery/ missiles to neutralise them, without putting more than a handful of troops in. Otherwise...it's just wishful pissing in the wind by the west!.

has denied using LNG as a political weapon . "This is just politically motivated chatter, which has no basis whatsoever," he said in October last year. Even before the 2014 hostilities, Moscow had launched efforts to diversify gas supply routes to the European Union, saying the Ukrainian system was dilapidated and accusing the country of siphoning gas. Now, tensions between the EU and Russia are again soaring over the deployment of an estimated 127,000 Russian troops near the Ukraine border. What is Europe doing in response? Norway, among Europe's suppliers, has stepped up with more pipeline gas. The United States has offered reassurances that it will help its European allies find alternative supplies. EU legislation requires countries to help each other in the case of a gas shortfall. Governments can declare a gas emergency and shut off industrial customers to spare households, hurting the economy but sparing a humanitarian and political disaster. The US and Australia are offering extra gas to Europe. ( AP: Bela Szandelszky ) Yet the system has never been tested, and there are questions about how willing countries would be to share gas in a crisis. UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss said Europe needed to become less reliant on Russian gas when addressing the Lowy Institute in Sydney last week "[Australia and the UK] are determined to act together ... for our economic security," she said. "It means cutting strategic dependence on authoritarian regimes, starting with Europe's dependence on Russian gas. "We're pushing for alternatives in energy supply, so that nations are less reliant on Russia for their gas." Analysts say the solution is more investment in renewables such as wind and solar. Yet European officials concede gas will play a role for years during that transition. How might Australia step in to alleviate shortages? The federal government hopes to meet some of Europe's demand for liquefied natural gas. LNG is sold worldwide to companies operating in countries looking to diversify energy sources away from coal, and Australia is one of the world's largest producers and exporters. According to Adelaide-based consultancy EnergyQuest, LNG exports from Australia hit a record high of 80.9 million tonnes in 2021. Europe, meanwhile, started 2021 with gas storage only 56 per cent full, compared with 73 per cent a year earlier. Lack of Russian deliveries on the spot market is one factor in the shortage, as is the advent of winter on the continent and robust demand in Asia for liquefied natural gas that comes by ship. As it moves to reduce pollution caused by coal-fired power stations, China in particular has been scrambling for gas supplies to prop up its energy supplies. Europe's association of pipeline operators says cold weather would mean needing to import 5 per cent to 10 per cent more gas than the maximum volumes observed in recent years to avoid the risk of shutoffs. There are fears an invasion of Ukraine could also disrupt global food supply chains. ( ) Mr Tehan said geopolitical events could be a boon for Australian exporters. "The current geostrategic environment that Australia faces is the most complex since the Second World War," he said. "This environment will continue to present both challenges and opportunities to Australian exporters now and into the future."
