The university sector is undermining basic legal principles when it comes to sexual harassment or assault allegations on campus, according to Liberal Senator Amanda Stoker. Australian universities have overhauled sexual assault procedures after a 2016 Australian Human Rights Commission found 51 per cent of domestic students reported they have been sexually harassed on at least one occasion.

Senator Stoker told Sky News that everyone recognises sexual assault is a serious allegation that needs to be “rigorously investigated". However, she said the current guidelines are resulting in "the basic rights of the person against whom an allegation is made are getting completely squashed". She said the current system is skewed towards the alleged victim with the alleged perpetrator being unable to access legal assistance and not able to see all the evidence against them.
