Unions are calling for the working holiday visa program to be scrapped and replaced with policies instead focused on employing young Australians.

The Australian Workers’ Unions, the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association and the Transport Workers’ Union say the working holiday scheme is riddled with worker exploitation and industry failures. In a joint submission to a federal review, the unions said agricultural industries have relied for too long on backpackers to fill jobs in regional areas.

The unions said the recruitment of migrant workers needs to be overhauled and replaced by targeted programs to fill skill shortages that can’t be filled locally. Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has also previously described how Australian workers can show a “real aversion” to go and pick fruit.

yes! stuff young Aussies who 'dont want to do it'! If they are ON THE PENSION and meant to find a job, then MAKE them work!! Lots of people 'dont like' their jobs but they feed their family anyway. Send the dole bludgers!!

Great our young ones won't struggle to get work Not all the youth are lazy It took my kids a long time to get jobs couldn't even get them on the farms picking produce cause they wanted people with visa

Finally!!! The student visas have been abused by industrial greed. 20hrs English study plus 20hrs work ends up being— 0hrs English studies and 70 hrs work. Tiling, plaster board, painters ect have been replaced by student grunt work directed by greedy employers. Exploitation!!!

Working holiday visa = slave labour

Got to think that someone can travel half way around the world, set them self up, find a job and contribute to Australia, but others cannot catch an hour train ride and do the same. FYI a large number of working visitor visa holders do not have significant savings when they come.

Ok, can anyone tell me what the weekly take home is for this sort of work? Ive asked politicians, farmers, commentator's and no one, no one will answer the fkn question. So?

Shutdown the internet and online games and you just might stand a chance, albeit a slim one. Sad Generation we have today.

Now we just need those employing pickers to provide them decent living conditions and wages.

About bloody time. Should have happened 15-20 years ago or whenever the numbers started skyrocketing. Virtually every non-western country puts the interests of their own population first, and rightly so. If it was boom times, maybe it should be different.

If unions wanted young Australians employed they'd oppose mandatory labour pricing policies incentivising selection of applicants with more experience, qualifications, training &/or maturity. 'Fine, if I have to pay that much, I'll get someone who's more worth it.' = reality

And nothing against Vanuatans but what did this say about us?

Wow....unions encouraging work! Good Iuck with that BTW....far more to be made off govt incentives for them to work.

Right now strawberries and fruit is rotting because there is no one to pick it without the backpackers if aussies are so keen to work where are they when they are so sorely needed.

Parochial, narrow-minded thinking on the part of unions seeking to curry favour with nationalists

Unions again to the rescue of the Australian worker... If you'd rather hire foreign hands over Australian youth then you aren't the full quid...

Good luck with that !!!!!

Are young people still being tricked into working for one dollar an hour, called “training allowance”? If so, what are the unions doing about this?

What unions were involved in the Victorian hotel quarantine?

Have a 'green army'. Young folk go by bus from the city to designated cropping areas for a minimum 2 weeks. Remember we had conscription in the past. That was a lot longer and nastier than being on a farm with a bunch of others your own age.

Well fancy that, unions actually trying to do something for workers.

Fair call. But are young Australians prepared to pick fruit in rural centres?

Picking fruit ? The poor cupcakes would die.

DON'T SCRAP THE PROGRAM UNTIL YOU HAVE ENOUGH GENUINE AUSSIE WORKERS!

As I recall they wanted the 457 visa scrapped for the same reason

But won't that impact negatively on those employers' abilities to exploit workers to maximise profit margins? How can employers ensure unquestioning & meek compliance if they can't threaten a worker's stay in our caring country?

Can't afford Australians - that's always been the problem!

Are they calling for the mass importation of third world refuse to be scrapped also?

Given the rampant exploitation of workers on temporary work visas until now?..

Took them long enough

Finally I actually agree with the union!

Won’t work. Australian unemployed youth in 2020 are bludgers. Successive Governments have turned them into being welfare dependant. Why should they work when they get so much money not to?. workforthedole

I think they get something wrong here... the fact is young Australians do not want to do those jobs...

How are they going to get them to work?

Racist!!!!1111
