US Studies Centre Research Fellow Brendan Noone says the cyberattack on Australia – revealed by the Prime Minister today – has occurred at such a time as to direct all blame toward China.

Scott Morrison announced that all levels of the Australian government and private sector were targeted in the mass-scale cyberattack by a state-based actor with “very significant capabilities”. Mr Noone told Sky News there were only a few actors in the international community with the capabilities to carry out such a broad attack.

“We all know this is coming at a time when Australia is being coerced to use some of the government’s own language by China across economic levels,” he said. “You have to place it, I guess, in its context and it can’t be helped that this is seen possibly as part of a widespread campaign conducted against Australia, along with a bunch of other levers that China may be pulling as well.

'Beijing will hate' the 'positive global impact of Marise Payne’s China speech' | Sky News AustraliaThe fact Foreign Minister Marise Payne’s recent speech regarding China will have 'a positive impact globally' is really 'the reason Beijing will hate it most,' according to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Michael Shoebridge.\n\nForeign Minister Marise Payne has accused Beijing of spreading disinformation and called for the reform of global bodies including the World Health Organisation in her first major speech on the post-COVID climate.\n\n'At the heart of successful international cooperation is the concept each country shares rather than yields a portion of its sovereign decision making,' Ms Payne said. \n\nIn response to the speech within the communist party, 'I think they will react at the top level with outrage,' Mr Shoebridge told Sky News host Peter Gleeson.\n\nHe said those within the regime would view this as 'just an anti-China bias and Australia's part of a US lead cabal'. \n\n'I think a whole lot of other countries will look at the speech very differently'. \n\n'Underneath that anger out of Beijing, will be a pretty sober realisation that the speech is really going to have a positive impact globally'. \n\n'And that's the reason Beijing will hate it most'. China 'striking out' at India to cover COVID-19 'anxiety' | Sky News AustraliaRising border tensions between India and China are linked with the threat of the coronavirus pandemic on China’s home front, according to ASPI Director Michael Shoebridge. \n\nIndia claimed on Tuesday that 20 soldiers were killed by Chinese forces in border clashes which happened after several weeks of stand offs in the western Himalayas. \n\nMr Shoebridge told Sky News the Chinese government feared their authority would be discredited by their handling of the pandemic as Beijing faced a potential second wave of the virus. \n\n“They also are aware that the pandemic has deeply damaged their credibility internationally,” he said. \n\n“When the Chinese communist party feels weakened and threatened it traditionally strikes out, it gets confrontational.\n\n“I think it’s trying to display strength and I think some commentators have played into that by saying Beijing is taking advantage of the pandemic as an opportunity.\n\n“Well I think Beijing sees it more as a real weakness and a source of anxiety and this aggression is to cover that.” \n\nImage: AP I don't see what burning the Chinese flag accomplishes.
