Two women have been charged and a man is in hospital under police guard after a car was allegedly stolen from a petrol station, sparking a dramatic peak-hour police chase on the Princes Freeway.

Police said they were called to Cobblebank, in Melbourne's outer west, early on Monday after receiving reports a Nissan ute had been stolen from a service station on the Western Freeway about 5.20am."The owner of the other vehicle, he'd gone in to get a coffee and had left his keys in the ignition and the car running," said Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie on Monday.Police then gave chase on the Princes Freeway near Lara.

Detective Senior Sergeant Guthrie said the car was driving dangerously above the speed limit, and at some stages in the emergency lane and on the wrong side of the road. "They were putting a number of people in danger, not only themselves, but innocent people that were going to work, doing their own business," he said.It is believed the ute hit at least two other cars during the high-speed chase.Officers managed to stop the vehicle about 7am and surrounded it on the side of the highway. Police arrested the trio.

The two women charged have been granted bail and will appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on January 20.Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at
