A man is in custody this morning over a double shooting in Melbourne’s south east. Witnesses tried to distract the gunman until police arrived. SaraJones_7 7NEWS

Two people have been killed after a man allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting in Melbourne’s south east in what police say was a “dispute between neighbours”.

He said he saw group of people he knew having a chat and shook some of their hands before wishing them a happy new year.“I walked off and the second I jumped in the car, which would have been five to seven seconds later, I hear a gunshot,” he told 7NEWS.The man said the police station was around the corner so he drove straight there to report what had happened.

“I was trying to lure him back so I could run him over to be honest. There was elderly people there. They were all scared,” he said.Emergency services found two people with critical injuries and they were treated at the scene, but sadly died.Police say officers searched the area before the suspect was located.
