The Australian's foreign editor Greg Sheridan believes the hysteria around the Democrats' impeachment move is likely to wind up being a boon for the US president and bad news for Joe Biden. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official investigation into Donald Trump over an alleged abuse of power, accusing the president of pressuring Ukraine to dig-up information about his political rival Joe Biden in a phone call.
Mr Sheridan told Sky News he would be “astonished” if Donald Trump had “been so foolish to say something in this phone conversation which is a slam dunk case of him committing an illegality”. “By moving this impeachment, they probably help Trump to some extent rather than hurt him,” he said. “Trump is not going to lose office as result of impeachment, but it will allow him to associate Joe Biden with scandal.” Mr Biden is a frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
