The Russian trial of detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been scheduled for June 26 and will be held behind closed doors.

A trial date has been set for detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich after Moscow formally accused him of spying for the CIA in Yekaterinburg .

Gershkovich has been imprisoned since his arrest in March 2023 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. “Time is of the essence. As we’ve said, the Russian regime’s smearing of Evan is repugnant and based on calculated and transparent lies. Journalism is not a crime, and Evan’s case is an assault on free press,” WSJ said.

Vladimir Putin has said a prisoner exchange with the United States was possible. Picture: Alexei Nikolsky / TASS via Getty Images Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month: “I won’t go into details. I know that the US administration is taking energetic steps to secure his release.”
