The fate of “wrongfully detained” American journalist Evan Gershkovich has taken a turn for the worse after Russia announced it would proceed with charges against the 32-year-old.

Russia has proceeded with an indictment against wrongfully detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and formally accused the 32-year-old of spying for the CIA .

Spokesman Andrei Ivanov told Russian media on Thursday: “The Prosecutor General’s Office has approved an indictment in the criminal case against US citizen Evan Gershkovich.” “The investigation has established that… Gershkovich, following instructions from the CIA in March 2023, collected secret information in the Sverdlovsk region,” Mr Ivanov said.

Mr Gershkovich has vehemently denied the allegations against him, as has the Wall Street Journal, while President Joe Biden has called the detention “totally illegal”. “And when he gets out to Yekaterinburg, that's when the trial process most likely will start,” Mr Carstens said. Prosecutors have not publicly presented any information or evidence supporting the claims against Mr Gershkovich since his arrest in March 2023.
