Treasurer Jim Chalmers has indicated measures to boost Australia’s dwindling birthrate will be in the upcoming May budget, but flagged support would be dissimilar to the now dumped Howard government lump-sum baby bonus scheme.

At the same time, the natural population increase fell 3.9 percent to just 111,000 people, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Mr Chalmers on Friday revealed additional support to raise birth rates was discussed in planning for the upcoming 2024-25 budget, to be handed down on Tuesday about 7:30pm.

When asked if another baby bonus reminiscent of the Howard-era would be announced on Tuesday, Mr Chalmers pointed to the government’s faith in alternative supports for growing families.Australia's dwindling birth rate has sparked calls for the government to bolster natural population growth rather than bank on international arrivals. The scheme, introduced January 2011, now sees the federal government pay 20 weeks' leave and it will rise to 26 weeks by 2026. “That’s one of the proudest things I think Katy and I have been working on over the course of the first couple of years”.
