My earliest childhood memories involve books. Sunday rides to Acland Street, St Kilda on a lavender bike. Spending hours hunched over potential purchases on the floor of what was then Cosmos bookstore, lured out by the promise of a beachside lemon gelati. A book that would likely only last me one night of voracious reading, the sneaky torch under the doona trick. I was a binge-reader from way back.
The characters in my books know nothing of this time. On each page, they went about their days, blissfully unaware of the current climate. They were heart-broken and heart-breaking and flawed and suffered in their own ways. They let me bear witness to their traumas and triumphs, as all good friends do.and returned to reality in Melbourne with gherkins and rye on my shopping list. I binge-read Jessie Tu’sand felt close to Jena, even though I knew it was one sided.
I revisited old favourites, like a return to old school friends. The way you don’t even have to try with people you’ve known since your formative years. The comfort of a second read, how you can make new discoveries on the path to a known endpoint. They were written in a different time and it was not their fault their entry to the world was under these conditions. I felt a duty to these characters and although it could be seen as kindness to offer this support, my purchase behaviour was completely self-serving. It was an act of complete denial. Nothing to see here, little book. Everything is OK. Take a seat on my bedside table, just don’t look outside!with a group of 140 undergraduate students.
NatashaSholl Bah. Who cares?! 'Scolded' is too emotive. Your content-filling needlessness doesn't inspire me to subscribe to this apparent new tabloid.
NatashaSholl Couldn’t she just read those 20 books she had been meaning to read for the past 8 years or is she normal?
NatashaSholl I hoarded video games and vinyl records 🤷♂️
