Extra transport staff will be deployed across Sydney today to ensure travellers are adhering to social distancing measures on public transport.

Authorities have allocated 20 teams of security and marshalling officers to manage a predicted surge in congestion as students return to full time in-class learning and more people return to work.

Commuters have been advised to avoid travelling at peak hours if possible as buses, trains and ferries have seen a drastic reduction in capacity as part of a plan to maintain social distancing protocols. Pop-up car parks have been erected across Sydney as more people are expected to drive their cars to avoid crowding on public transport, which state authorities are concerned will lead heavier traffic on the roads.
