First minister tells MSPs Isla Bryson will not be detained in Scotland’s all-female Cornton Vale prison

Isla Bryson, a transgender woman found guilty of raping two women before transitioning, will not be imprisoned in Scotland’s all-female Cornton Vale prison, Nicola Sturgeon has told the Scottish parliament.

Pressed repeatedly on the matter at first minister’s questions on Thursday by the Scottish Conservative leader, Douglas Ross, Sturgeon said she agreed it was not possible to have a rapist incarcerated within a female prison. It later emerged that Sturgeon had made a rare intervention concerning the prison service decision about Bryson during a meeting involving Keith Brown, the justice secretary, which took place shortly before she announced at Holyrood that Bryson was being moved from Cornton Vale.

He denied suggestions Sturgeon took part directly in that meeting and acknowledged ministers very rarely were involved in decisions about individual prisoners, but said Sturgeon believed no rapist should be held in a women’s prison.

To play the devil's advocate for a moment. Should men who rape other men in prison be part of the prison population? Wouldn't it be more constructive if prisons concentrated on reform rather than revenge? Even for the psychopaths who may never change?

Trans athletes are ‘taking away’ opportunities from other women: Amelia StricklerBritish shot put champion Amelia Strickler says transgender athletes are “taking away” opportunities from other women that have “worked so hard” to become elite-level performers. “It’s really about keeping women’s sport fair,” Ms Strickler told Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan. “It’s happening at grassroots level as well already. “It’s a real issue.” Who? Uh, no. No, they’re not. The only athletes claiming this are ones that couldn’t win anyway, but they just need to deflect away from their own lack of skill and/or practice.

‘It felt like a job application’: the people weeding out first dates with questionnairesSome app users are sending out surveys to screen potential suitors. But can a pop quiz ever lead to love? One point in this article is incorrect. The 36 questions that lead to love were not to 'weed people out' but to create intimacy. Very different to a 'vetting' style type of list. Love arrives, in its own time, in its own way... it's not the same as applying for a job.
