Townsville police say six juvenile offenders used a knife to cut drivers from their seatbelts while attempting to steal their cars, as tensions regarding youth crime continue to simmer in Queensland.

Police are searching for about six young offenders who terrorised drivers at knifepoint in Townsville on Sunday.Motorists are being urged to lock their cars while driving, as police continue efforts to curb youth crime .

"One lady was actually delivering Mother's Days flowers when these people approached in a stolen vehicle," he said. "They are … brazen, and they are carrying weapons, so no matter what their age is, you have to consider them dangerous," he said."When you're stopped at the traffic lights, be aware you've got to look around and see what's coming," he said.

"Victims are absolutely at the centre of everything the government does," they said, pointing to the community safety plan and $1.3 billion in new funding for police, youth justice and victim support services.
