The road into Mallacoota has completely reopened more than a month after a devastating bushfire forced residents and holidaymakers to abandon their belongings and flee the picturesque coastal town

"[I'm] expecting to shed a few tears... But also happy that we can spend money in the little towns along the way."

The family hope to retrieve their car and belongings, including clothes, musical instruments, work tools and a trailer. The couple's property was spared, but locals say around 60 others burnt down in the town on New Years Eve.Arborists, road workers and emergency services helped to reopen the 22-kilometre stretch of road.

"The heat of the fire in this area destroyed safety infrastructure such as guide posts and signs, and damaged sections of the road surface. Countless trees from the surrounding forest required assessment and complex removal," the Department of Transport said in a statement on Thursday. More than 650 kilometres of arterial roads and highways in the east of the state have reopened, with another 220 kilometres still on restricted access.Air quality was still considered "very poor" in East Gippsland on Thursday, according to the Environment Protection Authority, with persistent smoke worsening visibility for drivers.

Victoria's bushfire crisis has so far burnt through more than 1.5 million hectares, razing or significantly damaging 405 homes and 653 other buildings.
