Nearly 200 tourists trapped at New Zealand's Milford Sound after torrential rains will have to wait until Wednesday before they can be flown out

Rescue operations were under way for another 31 people who were stuck in a hut nearby that was hit by a landslide early on Tuesday. They had been walking a days-long hiking route.

While some had received minor injuries, the hikers were safe and the priority was to get them out along with others who might be trapped on various tracks in the region, the Southland region's emergency management controller Angus McKay said on Tuesday.Weather conditions and road closures meant it was best to keep the 195 tourists and about 200 hotel and lodge staff in Milford until they can be safely transported out, McKay said.

Despite its remote location, about 120 kilometres from the next town Te Anau, it is one of the most visited spots in the country. A state of emergency for the Fiordland area was declared to allow agencies to gather resources for the remote area.
