Hobart City Council says no to cable car bid for kunanyi/Mount Wellington

Deputy Lord Mayor Helen Burnet said the idea of a cable car had split the community for "many, many years".

"This is not the same as negotiating with a developer about their own private land … we are the custodians, the caretakers of that land," Ms Reynolds said. "Destroying that alpine garden that has been created over centuries, if not thousands of years, is the greatest danger to our mountain. However, that is not a planning consideration," he said.

Before debate began, the council heard from community groups with an interest in the development. The MWCC also gave a presentation. "If we go ahead and build this project, and I sincerely hope we do, we have to do a substantial capital raising to pay for it and part of that will be convincing investors that the business can make a fair return, not a huge return but a fair return."Several attempts have been made over the decades to put a cable car on the mountain.

Good. This was a perfect example of people chasing profits over what's best for a city.

Thank God for that. Gaudy tacky tourist claptrap

Fantastic!

Congratulations to the City Council for their decision.

Good

About time this stupid idea was dropped. Reminds me of the old lamented Sydney Monorail.

They said no to red awnings on a building. Going by this, did anyone seriously think they would say yes to a cable car?

Divided city reaches boiling point with anti-lockdown protestLike many people, I wished the very worst upon the anti-lockdown protesters in Sydney. But then I sensed the air of condescension on social media. And began to feel a little sick. Yes, divided between sky after dark listeners & the rest of sydney. A real division. Why are we not highlighting the dangerous lies of Chris Kenny Rowan Dean Daisy Cousens Paul Murray Rita Panahi Alan Jones Petra Credlin They need to be fined for inciting violence skykillers This article makes the division worse. Whatever you think of the seriousness of Covid it's time to move on, prevention is now far worse than the disease. this is exactly writing style of journalists trying to preserve the old system by condemning protests in 1856 for 8h workday or Sydney bathing costume protests in 1907 just now pretending to be progressive and tolerant while using racial slurs people who don't share their opinion
