Colleagues say the former Liberal Party leader could be to blame if the Coalition is forced into minority government | JacquelineMaley

Tony Abbott’s treatment of his seat as a "personal fiefdom" has angered colleagues who say the former Liberal leader could be to blame if the Coalition is forced into minority government because he refused to retire for a fresh candidate.

The government is preparing to fall just short of the 77 seats needed to form a majority government after providing a Speaker. ''[Mr Abbott was] treating the seat as a personal fiefdom rather than putting the party’s interests first. "While it’s sad that people of the calibre of Malcolm Turnbull and Tony Abbott are no longer in the Parliament, the fact is we have a strong leader who is very committed to delivering for the Australian people and that should be the focus of all the Liberals now."

"The removal of Abbott and [defeated conservative senator] Jim Molan and the election of other candidates like Dave Sharma [in Wentworth] and Fiona Martin [in Reid] means you’re getting more moderate people into the party room, with a contemporary outlook," said one senior Liberal. "He was a major figure in our national life for 25 years and I know he will continue to contribute to his community out of Parliament as a lifesaver and a firefighter."He said that "undoubtedly" Mr Abbott would be making a contribution to national debate in the future.

JacquelineMaley How far into the future will fake news continue to blame a former election winning PM?

JacquelineMaley But they’re going to get a clear majority - what’s the point of this article ?

JacquelineMaley Abbott has got a lot to answer for, his ignorant attitude and forcing his personal opinions on everyone, his vengeful personality, allowing Peta Credlin to run his leadership like her pet dog, I could go on and on but running out of space.

JacquelineMaley Nothing’s worse than the stench of a politician past its use by date!

JacquelineMaley If true, 😂😂😂👏👏👏🤞🍾

JacquelineMaley Fair is fair, like the pm, as long as one thinks he has a chance, he got to fight for it. The nasty propaganda against him didn’t intensify until the campaign started.

JacquelineMaley What rubbish. Libs were likely to lose regardless of who was in the seat. Besides, if they get 76, with Katter, they can govern without the speakers vote.

JacquelineMaley I think it’s about time smh stopped going after Tony. Just get over it.

JacquelineMaley And if he did this biased as hell fake newspaper would be crying that he quit

JacquelineMaley Unnamed colleagues nuff said

JacquelineMaley Is this another made up story by Murdoch press. Lies damn lies and Murdoch. They only thing they get right are the date and price.

JacquelineMaley Lol - its their policies, mate. Nothing to get voters to give them 80 seats

JacquelineMaley The SMH is officially broken.
