The protesters who chose to demonstrate at the Shrine of Remembrance delivered a grave insult to those who gave their lives for this country | OPINION

As a child of a veteran, it infuriates me that anti-vaccine protesters in Melbourne chose to demonstrate at theProtesters gather at the Shrine of Remembrance on Wednesday. The Shrine does not stand for warped ideologies or whatever it is that this group imagines about it that gives them the right to align with and stand on, as they describe it, the “sacred ground” that is the Shrine.

The Shrine is a solemn place where veterans and their families gather to think about all they have lost.

Our soldiers did not fight for outright stupidity - this is not a question of choice it’s a question of everyone doing their bit for the common good, which is something I’m sure our diggers understood - and right now that means getting vaccinated

Maybe when their on their last breath suffering from the effects of COVID they will realise what they should’ve already realised

How dare they defile the Shrine and follow up with spitting on nurses? Low acts

oh no people the 'child of a veteran' is upset that people have chosen a place that signifies 'freedom' to hold their protest against state oppression! fer fcks sake

Why weren't they stopped?

No, they really didn’t. The site was merely that. A site. An open space. The content of the protest had nothing to do with the meaning of the site.

Fighting tyranny in your own country is never disrespectful. That’s what they died for. People need to remember that.

'Those who gave their lives for this country' would be turning in their graves at what Labor has done to this country... its now the police state that Germany was in the 1930's 💀

Nope - people died for people to have basic human rights . They did not die for a Chinese style government.

the over 20 year olds don't have any respect for anybody or anything these days

The shrine is the most appropriate place in which to stage a protest. It is the 'SPIRIT' house of the collective clan. Protesting before the AUSUS (spirit) is pleading to our ancestors.

Without freedom from coercion, oppression, freedom of bodily autonomy, freedom to speak, freedom of the press, true informed consent, what did our fathers and grandfathers fight for? Don't judge the movement by the actions of a few.

I thought veterans were fighting for freedom? Does freedom mean living in a country where you will be forced to nominate a family to go on holiday with? As that exact what will happen once this state reaches 80% of the vaccination rollout. That’s not the freedom they fought for.

Why wasn’t this your headline today? You have lost me and all my family! There used to be a good newspaper in Melbourne. Unfortunately that disappeared!

The shrine is sacred. However, neither side should claim the thoughts of our dead veterans to support their political points of view. Their personal thoughts and ideals have been taken with them to their graves.

Yeh………nah……….

Let us only remember the servicemen who are honoured by the Shrine and not those pathetic protesters who don’t deserve any association with it. Cowardice and lawlessness remain fully with the protesters. Yesterday, all of Melbourne immediately saw them with total disgust.

Not protestors….. rioters

They gave their lives so we could be free. Free of tyranny. To live in a democracy where we can choose what goes into our own bodies. They will be turning in their grave. Melbourne, Chinas wet dream

Freedom is such an open ended concept, too easily abused for the wrong cause. Freedom must come with responsibility to enable a functioning society. Responsibility for civility, for Government to act on just concerns, for elite to contain their excesses and manipulation.

the shrine honors people who were committed to community and to country which meant sacrifice ...unlike the parasites who dont want to commit to the community by getting vaccinated....total selfish tossers who wouldnt do as those the shrine honors...

Even with what occured on the West Gate, these people were not union, but thugs..otherwise they would have respected that union members lost their lives building the bridge... utter disgrace...yes freedom of speech and we say get lost

This is an expectation and not just an opinion.

‘Deeply selfish, indulgent’: Deputy Labor leader condemns Melbourne protestsProtesters at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance attempted to “undermine confidence” in public health orders and the vaccine rollout, says federal deputy Labor leader Richard Marles. What he should be condemning…. Police using violence against peaceful protesters. Just like the CCP. 'Mr Marles defended the unions and praised their efforts in supporting the Victorian government’s decision to mandate vaccinations in the sector' And that`s exactly why the construction workers are protesting The unions have betrayed their members who they are supposed to protect Your coverage is mostly the problem.
