Australia should 'bite the bullet' and build a high-speed rail line between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, says Anthony Albanese

Australia should “bite the bullet” and build a high-speed rail line between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, senior Labor figure Anthony Albanese said, in a sign the opposition is preparing to put the perennial election issue back on the agenda.

He said the Morrison government was already investigating building high-speed rail along the east coast. The federal agency said in its most recent infrastructure priority report that corridor preservation between Melbourne and Brisbane remained a high priority.

Australia has far more important things that need addressing than what train we should get next.

bite the bullet: يتخذ قرار صعب ترجمة

I vote for a reasonably fast train where you have internet, on time arrival and you don’t have to get on a bus half way to your destination to complete the trip. Not a lot to ask. Ditch the pie in the sky crap. Just get what we have working according to its potential🤗

How about we get suburban trains going first. Our cities are a crush.

Pathetic really. No new ideas again.

And NEWCASTLE!!!! 5th largest city in Australia, would alleviate housing crisis in Sydney. Pay attention to the REGIONS !!!!! AnthonyAlbanese

Doooooo iiiiiitttttttt aalllltrreeeaaaddyyy. For fucks sake.

Can't get high speed broad band. Start building then change government it will be rail to the node.

What about to Perth? This would improve trade and tourism in both directions It would possibly drive airfares down if the train was suitable competition. Fast Rail to ALL Australian major cities would be great It will take billions of dollars 💵 💵 💵 💵 investment, is it viable?

Every few years for many decades this one has been trotted out. I'd like to take you seriously, Albo, but ......

yobblysquidge why ? whode use it great expense little gain

Grand futuristic plan with a lot of media exposure from AlboMP , Would he be reminding us that he is still there to take over if billshortenmp stumbles.

yobblysquidge Tax payer funded and then handed over to foreign corporations that will increase prices, sack and exploit workers whilst paying zero or very little tax in Australia? That's the standard model isnt it?

Fantastic idea

VotenoBansharia QANTAS and other airline services won't like it and will engage in extensive media and political propaganda to stop it.

Absobluddylootly! I’ve been saying this for decades since the 90’s . Since I travelled on the TGV in 89’. Only now I reckon the electro magnetic Shanghai Maglev system is superior to anything else around and we get dat one!

Is there a requirement that when there is an election that politicians must mention a high speed train.

Pink batts scheme revisited in the form of a high speed train.mmmmmm

Possibly the greatest white shoe real estate rort ever devised.

none of you can commit to anything Singapore did all there's within 50 years weve been here over 200

And get the kids speaking Mandarin, about time to me to wheel that one out again. A few hundred million thrown at schools will do it.

So that's why Albanese is not the leader.

phbarratt If memory serves, the time for biting this bullet was 1987. And 1992. And 1999. And 2006. And 2012.

Maybe fix NBN and overhaul Centrelink first huh!

They can’t even do trams and old snail trains properly. Bullet trains!!! Hahaha! They might crash on day one!

gwendabgilbert No, Australians should bite Albanesi's head off after devastating drought, floods, bushfires, cyclones etc regarding funding high-speed rail. No train runs through those! Try reallocating funding 2 resurrecting our farming industries you dill! Priorities over pipe-dreams buddy!

dm_aus I thought everybody was doing flying cars now! 😧

Betterthancoal.

Who pays for it? The fairies at the bottom of the garden?.

Yeah we cld pay Adani to do it ..its a no brainer

My apologies but we dont have enough water in this country with billions of gallons running out to sea in nth qld yet we can find billions for this nonsense your in a hurry get on a plane in sydney melbourne fix our water retention problems first

How about we fix our local transport networks first? High speed rail between satellite towns/cities and major cities I.e. Geelong/Melb, Ballarat/Melb would provide working opportunities for some whilst moving population out of the city.

Proof of an upcoming election in Australia is when someone starts talking about high speed rail.

We are in debt some $600,000,000,000 and turning our country into a low paid service and tourist economy....we can’t afford these types of projects.

“In a pair a massive green clown shoes”

It should! Melbourne is overrun by Tasmanians going to bands, spread the load!

Given how many of us in NSW have to travel between Sydney and Newcastle, this can only be a good thing.

dazza50 ... via Canberra, which would be very useful.

The ALP investigated and killed off the super fast train back in the 90s. Just more talk from the ALP.

Yes!!!

Come on seriously? Seriously!

Where did the majority of excess water go from the recent monsoon in North QL? Australia should bite the bullet and build a surface mounted water pipe line From North to South & East to West. Make Australia drought free should be an absolute priority. The train can wait.

Ahhhhhhhhhh this old chestnut......The VFT...wash rinse repeat. Lets spend another few million on a study AlboMP My God you lot are full of 💩

ALBO'S RIGHT!!

And the rail corridor goes where ?

Albo, another uncosted Labor project in the same vein as the NBN was announced.

Running short on ideas Albosleaze? Or just more diversions .....auspol

There is a good reason why this hasn’t been built. Because it will cost a fortune and be largely funded by taxpayers. It will be quicker and cheaper flying and there are numerous projects which have much greater benefit and business case.

And a second airport at Badgerys Creek... sorry, that was last election....um...bridge to Tassie?

Definitely

Japan has had high speed rail since the 70s. It’s a fantastic rail system & every time I travel on it I get angry at my country, Australia, for being so backward. shinkasan nextstopNBN

How about we build the Bradfield scheme. You know the the one designed by the bloke that designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

How about spending those 100s of billions making regional areas more attractive instead of just perpetuating the BNE SYD MEL bubble. The more you spend the more people come...its just a big sponge!

UP here we would be happy to have at least 3 fast trains a day between Mackay ,Townsville ,Cairns ,instead of trying to stay alive on our highway .as for Electric Rail the only part of Electric we have is the Boom Gates and Flashing lights ,were still in the 1970,s .even 60,s

How about around Australia?

I wonder what Virgin and QANTAS will do ...

And Canberra!

Na Waste of Money ..Let's Build Submarines.

The day we have a major air disaster that effects all air travel in this country, will be the day we wished we had a viable high speed rail network. We’re far too reliant on air travel and have no second option at all.

Another labor thought bubble that will cost a fortune for no net gain.

janer98 I would have thought a properly sealed highway from Western Australia to Brisbane via Alice Springs would be developed first. Primary infrastructure still years behind in this country

What brand of drink coaster was used in this bizarre plan? NBN Conroy

If anyone has been to Japan or Korea you know these high speed rail systems aren’t a joke. There are no shortcuts. Imagine hundreds of km of “sky rail”. Greenies will have heart attacks for all the endangered frogs of whatever.

Yes.

You can GUARANTEE!! When Labor has nothing, they pull out this farkin doozy. Time and Time again.. At least Keating tried the Multi Function Polis. The fucking bullet train...

And what happened to Adelaide and Perth?

It won’t happen because airlines will make politicians to veto it. We have been talking about it for too long and nothing has happened.

For what possible purpose?

Include Canberra enroute please

We have been talking about this for 50 years. Lets start with high speed rail between Sydney and Wollongong and Newcastle. At least there is population to substantiate it.

It'd be good for a month until some drunken pin head walked onto tracks and gets vaporized then it'd just be another train going slow. See QLD tilt train 🤦‍♂️

But not to Adelaide? Okkkkkkkkkk

I recall the then govts saying this would start back in 1985, still waiting to turn a sod. will never happen due to low populations

Nah just get elon musk back in to bore some tunnels.

CrStuartJames About 20 years too late

tunnel vision

phbarratt MichaelPascoe01 mjrowland68 murpharoo Shit , we have so many other problem s surely a Major Pipeline from North QLD To the Fairburn Dam near Emerald is more important to save the MurrayDarling , & id go so far to say save Australia , get Cotton Rice of this River System

Hes actually right having just returned from Japan thei rail network craps on ours .

You can fly Melb-Bris for $200. Yep AlboMP I’m sure people would be queueing up to pay $1500 + for same trip on slower (most likely far slower given the heat & distance) train or will you do renewables trick on this too & tax air travel out of existence? realityplease AusPol

Please....... They’ve been talking about this Fast/Bullit train for frickin years. This is the closest I’ll ever get to one

An underground rail line, yes.

phbarratt It'll end up as high speed rail between Gosford and Newcastle, with buses and a unicycle for the rest

phbarratt Omg let’s get homeless people off the street into housing.

GailElizabethW SpiffingFrocks Robyne7 The lengths I'll go to to get the kettleclub together.

Absolutely. But it would take Australia 30 years to build it at today’s levels of infrastructure output. Perhaps bring the Japanese over to build it in 3?

I can’t bring myself to read it, even if it’s Albo. Yet another pre-election fast train. I’m sick of speculation. I just want the damn thing built.

gregjamesbarton Yes, but aren’t we also in the process of biting the bullet with Sydney’s second airport?

No. First bring our third world so-called highways up to 21st Century dual carriageway standards. In NSW the Princes, New England and Great Western Highways, the Bell Road etc are dangerous and a disgrace.

Step 1: don't put QANTAS on the review panel.

Must be an election around the corner

Absolutely and I write this as I am just travelling from Osaka to Narita on Shinkansen 259kmh and free internet and Narita express 120kmh and free internet running at approx 11-17 download and 7-15 upload. We are a very very poor country.

...and Canberra! Do not forget Canberra or we will forget you AlboMP

It’s better if it “bites the dust”.

Every damn election. From my memory since the 80s, others say the 60s. Build it or don’t but STOP using it as an election promise. It’s so frigging hollow. All I hear when HSR is mentioned is “consultants” all over Australia saying “cha-ching $$$, here we go again”. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Nicklorentzen Of course they should do it but this is a country that takes 6 months to build a round a bout

it will never happen in my life time or my children or grandchildren

I really like AlboMP and this idea, but I don’t support your owner Peter Costello of the Lying National Pedophiles turning it into another Murdoch shit rag, so no like from me.

giddeygirl The longer it takes to start, the more costly it will become.

Why don't we have this yet though?🥴

Correct as short haul flights are extremely bad on the environment.

Not this again!!

Nah, will never happen. Australia is too small minded to think of the future. Too busy thinking of lining our own pockets!

Election must be around the corner

Solar powered

LadyofWildernes Someone is missing molars cause that 'train' left the station long ago. What we need now is Kevin Costner and Burt Lancaster. Anything else is plain dog whistling.

Not required. We need high-speed links to satellite towns.

roseannebyrne That looks like a giant green......oh, forget about it.

Would never make money... The business case would be an absolute dog.

If he would come up with a plan to save some of the up to $45b ( CityofS estimate) wasted on handing Sydney’s roads to WestCONnex, NSW could help fund it. Why does ALP support WestCONnex ?

Wouldn’t it be great not having to fly Qantas and be ripped off!

Govt has already crunched the numbers on this. Over $100 billion for land purchase between Sydney and Brisbane. Then throw the cost of construction on top. How much will tickets be to justify a return on the investment?!? Never gonna happen unfortunately.

More travellers require a rail out to TULLA. airport first!! The rail after that is a good idea!!

That way we can escape Liberal state govts faster...

Great idea, but Western Australia left out again.

AnthonyCole68 It's that time of year.

I wouldn’t trust anything Australian built going 300km/h.

It will never happen

cycleunionkp Get Elon to help you guys develop a hyperloop! You could make the trip in 25 minutes

The SMH or SYDNEY MORNING HARLOTS the most trusted name in Australia for FAKE NEWS spreading Labour BS thicker than Vegemite on toast. Must be pre election time again.

Hearing this from the time I migrated to Australia Yes it may be a white elephant initially but with every passing year the project cost goes up exponentially making it difficult to justify costs Just do it NOW as this will be useful in to future for growing Australia

Utopia.

It is probably not worth having the government build anything in Australia because the LNP just give it to their mates, inflate the fares, and then force us to use it.

Theres cheaper technology on the horizon.

Giant green platypus

It’s eeeeelection time! Roll out the fast rail chat

So drive giant dildos between the cities?

Travelled via the bullet trains while travelling Kyoto to Tokyo in Japan, incredibly fast and efficient.

Suppose Anthony will eventually succeed with his plan for a high speed rail. He deserves a win seeing he has raised issue at every election in recent years.

Bloody right, as well as freight hyperloop.

AnodyneParadigm Just been using them in Taiwan. Fvckin amazing.

The tain line should also connect Canberra.

Must be an election on. I wish I lived in a country where politicians had a long term vision.

YES!! Should have happened decades ago.

High speed to Canberra then steam to Melbourne ala Fibre to the node

Planes are cheaper

Fast trains are the answer to opening up Australia We are soo soo far behind the rest of the world on this its not funny. Not just capitals but to regional areas like ACT Bathurst Coffs Wagga Wagga etc

The high-speed train is very popular with the people who will open it and the people who will be paid to build it. Less supportive are the people who would have to pay for it...

Why don't we build a wall instead to keep the Southerners out? Who wants to go to Melbourne anyway?

You could start with the busiest sections (Wollongong to Newcastle) and areas around Brisbane and Melbourne to help people buy a house and live.

China has built & now operates over 35,000 Km of speed rail in the time we have been talking about it

Should have done it decades ago. Brisbane Adelaide too. Now it’s a humongous cost vs what it could have been. Imagine the job creation - take one look at Japan’s Shinkansen system. It’s a no brainer.

Should have been done years ago! AusVotes2019 auspol

You won’t have any money left by the time you’re finished

Get Gladys to do it! She's done wonders with that light rail!

Must be election time.

daveyk317 But can it carry bales of cotton, bags of Gina’s money, baby walkers and bassinets for Barnabys lot and live cattle to and from every LNP town in between the cities?

As long as the private sector funds it

Yes pleaseeeee it would save a lot of money on air fares

If you get in power AlboMP make it happen, no more studies, put the plan in place. It would make regional Australia more accessible and housing more affordable, or rather, greater access to affordable housing.

Why not have high speed that connects the west and east coast, that would actually make sense..

'Bite the bullet' = Blow own brains out. I'll be pissed if AustralianLabor plan to fund fast rail from it's retireetax.

South East Asian cities are building speed train network now: 1. Bangkok - Kuala Lumpur 2. Jakarta - Surabaya 3. Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi 4. KL - Singapore 5. Bangkok - Phnom Penh 6. Phnom Penh - Ho Chi Minh City

Tasmania needs to bite the bullet and actually build a commuter railway system from Hobart to Devonport. It's the only state in Aust that doesn't have a commuter railway!

Easier just to blame 'migrants' than actually build infrastructure

Yawn...been spoken about since Adam was a boy. Won’t happen.

We already have high speed travel, it’s called an “airliner”...

faully33 Given the coat hanger & duct tape mentality of our engineering/maintenance field, I shudder to think of how a very fast train would run.

Nah, lets wait until Elon gets his underground vacuum tubes functioning. Then we can cajole our politicians to use it to save tax payers money & prove that it's safe. Also shows they are willing to use this electric mode of transport to save polluting the skies with fossil fuels.

Could you please not publish another story on highspeedrail anywhere in Australia unless it is to tell us how to buy a ticket & what time it will leave...(& even then) smh AnthonyAlbanese

This is straight out of the tv series Utopia isn’t it?

AlboMP what a mad idea--in a country the size of China but with only 1.5% of China's population!!!.

That’s where the wasted NBN money should have gone.

Having traveled extensively on high speed rail in Spain & Portugal (itself not even a wealthy country like Australia) last year it’s well past time that Australia developed a HighSpeedRail network Albo.

We are a great big country and we need either infrastructure or all to live in the same place.

Yes! Wouldn’t it at last open our wonderful regional Australian towns to real growth and ability to take the strain off our over-developed capital cities.

There is too much wildlife in aust to ever build a true high speed rail

The perennial election roll-out.

How about just upgrading the current system to a decent system. Clapped out old unreliable trains that can’t keep to schedule & a signaling network that fails at the first sound of thunder. auspol sydneytrains nswtrainlink nswpol

I would be happy if u just built a cargo transport system and got the freaking trucks off the rd

With down turn in building this is the time to initate great National infrastructure (careful with big biz invol.) to keep jobs flow and fix the current decaying dysfunctional ad hoc systems we are lumbered with 10 yrs ago I caught trains in Spain that travelled 300 kmph.

Didn't California just show how tricky/impossible this is?

I'll vote for that!

Jetstar is going to go bankrupt if we had a bullet train

markgkenny Must be an election coming up or something...

Good grief. I did a project on the VFT for school 31 years ago. It aint going to happen. How much money has been spent running reports on something that cant work. How about world class internet?

Where’s the high speed train from Brisbane to the Gold Coast? Seriously. Where is it. On public transport that trip takes approximately two hours and twenty minutes. Annoying. transport trains auspol AlboMP

Or a Hyperloop.

Have to have it built & running before the Libs get back in or it’ll end up like the NBN.

30 years too late

daveyk317 AlboMP we don’t need a high speed rail line linking the three major east capitals. Better off building high speed rail between major coastal cities which are satellites of capital cities.

DuchessFrida There’ll be a few beads of sweat at Qantas on that declaration! No more gouging boys.

Aircraft fly above everything. Can work on antigravity drives to improve high altitude air travel, which would be best.

It would need to be fully enclosed in either above or below ground tunnel with no possibility of animal or plant life entering into the operational space. The speed is too high for open travel, would mean nothing would survive in its path.

Turn it into reality let’s stop talking about it

Albo: Dig up the pre-election high speed rail press pack. Staffer: The dates are blank. Albo: Yeah, we just fill them in every 3 years.

To be bluntly honest, as an Aussie, I'm not even aspiring for a high-speed train that would break world-record. Let's just say I'm looking for an upgraded train, comfortable carriage, decent speed and well-oiled operation. Is that too much to ask?

just going to leave it there.

Spot on!!! How this hasn’t happened yet is ridiculous

Absolutely!

YES! Bet the airline lobbyists wouldn't be happy tho

Every year we see encouraging articles, now is seems we have the population to support high-speed rail travel. Every example OS is supported by large populations and tourism.

AnthonyCole68 Is this a smoke screen? It gets brought out every time they wanna hide something

It would be rather cool, and incredibly popular

Excellent idea 👍

Don't forget Canberra.

daveyk317 I have now lived in Australia for 49 years, and every year this comes up,it is so obviously much needed so stop whingeing and just FUCKING BUILD IT.

Can't even build a decent standardised train system....heaven help us attempting a high speed train network!

You cant run the train systems u have now ... so how the hell will u be able to manage that and the costs to maintain it ... learn to crawl befor you run

Labor would start the construction planning to use high speed trains as in the photo. Liberals win govt and would deliver this while telling us it is better and cheaper than Labor's plan. In reality, slower and more expensive NBN is a prime example auspol

Just get on with it. Nation Building. NRN Co. Just like NBN Co. Stop wasting our money and time on self serving political party crap. Come on Princesses, let’s do it. How abt a AIP - Australian Infrastructure Party? Got my vote.

This is hilarious, every election the high speed rail gets trotted out. It's like an episode of hollow men. 🤣

Must be election time

What union will get richer out of this project? Also, it won't run on renewables so that rules out Melbourne as a destination

Then it could be sold off to the urban elite and billionaire media who always support Labor’s globalism and open borders intentions.

Who’s gauge will we use as three states are all different. Fast train to Goulburn never got off drawing board. Tilt trains shaved all station platforms failed. That’s why lighting from train one notices gap between carriage and platform

AnthonyCole68 Belt and Road chinese trains

Its election time. How about high-speed internet for a start.

That would be awesome!!

No thats what planes are for

Yes! The current service is not worthy of this century.

DuchessFrida Those suckers also look like they'd go underwater.

Really, it’s that time again

We couldn't even build the NBN . I would not go anywhere near this until we have an ICAC ...

iDGiam Fantastic idea.

It'll cost a trillion dollars.

Derr

news_australian Funding.......

Why?

Please do. This is way overdue already

Election - check High speed rail - check Post election - crickets

Nice thought, again 🙄 With what money? I think high speed rail is well down the list.

news_australian But get the Chinese to build at least the cars will fit the track gauge

daveyk317 High speed train Versus kangaroos etc, won’t end well

it will still be talked about when we’re all dead.

Great idea Albo! We can do it! spending less than on the NBN .Let's raise$55 Billion by selling digital rail track on a blockchain - by the meter. My Company can create a digital re-presentation of a meter development value, MDV. Marketing it to the world with an OZ govt.License

Via some key regional areas too. Satellite cities to make a work commute possible

Election year...

And a high speed NBN

Why would I take a expensive train ride when I can fly for $79

bwaaaaaaahaaaahaaaaa. This Government has already employed all their friends..

Possibly it might be better to get the NBN functioning properly before we start on another project?

It should've happened years ago. Build it ffs!!!!

If it goes anything like the NBN it will be wildly overpriced and be obsolete when it is finally finished

Why? Air travel is fast & relatively inexpensive, where is the demand coming from?

BibopGGresta

High speed trains work in nuclear powered countries like France Germany japan, need constant power at all times and need to go pretty straight ,will not work in this country, and never will until we become nuclear

why? we have cheap air travel to all those places.

Commercially not a viable option. But good thought. We don’t have population to cater for such projects sustainablity.

Hear, hear.

OMG how many times?

You can count on the support of the powerful aviation sector for sure...

Round and round the merry go round....

While you can fly Syd-Melb for $80 in an hour nobody is going to pay hundreds of dollars to sit for 3-4 hours on a train!

High speed trains work where you move massive numbers of people over relatively short distances like in Europe or Japan. The economics dont work for Aust small population and vast distance!

The quarterly high speed train article appears yet again.

Cut speed limits to 30km/h and save lives, road safety expert saysSpeed limits should be reduced to 'survivable limits' of 30 to 40 km/h as a default on residential streets with children and pedestrians, and a default of 80 km/h on highways and rural roads without life-saving barriers, said Australian road safety expert Emeritus Professor Raphael Grzebieta. Wonder how the dumb ‘driving toward ZERO’ campaign is going. Guess what, no one believes it, most just grin and nod their head, thinking ‘well that’s dumb isn’t it’ No. We need to vehemently push back against creeping speed limits. First 50 zones, then 40 zones (with no schools nearby), now there's a 30 zone in the CBD. Enough. At less NSW doesn’t have large highway signs dropping unexpectedly of drivers cars.

Opal tower debacle: building defects spark calls for reformsThe final report into the Opal Tower debacle has recommended the creation of a 'building structure review board' to improve construction of high-rises.
