A Brisbane watchhouse officer accused of failing in his duties when an Indigenous woman was found dead in her cell has successfully appealed part of his case against the Queensland Police Service.
The officer, who is disputing the incident in the QIRC, said he was not informed of any issues in the handover, but it was later discovered the woman had died due to a medical condition. She was covered in two blankets and the officer said he perceived, through the perspex of the cell, that she was sleeping.
He denied his entry – which included how he had completed a cell check and determined there were no problems – was false, but accepted the entry he made was incorrect. He argued it was not done deliberately. He argued rather than his inspection being inadequate, it was more likely the policy requirements were insufficient, particularly in circumstances where another, more senior, officer also made an incorrect assessment of the woman.
