Tributes for a well-known truckie Slim have flowed on social media.

Police were called to the horrific scene on the Eyre Highway at Yalata, on the edge of the Nullarbor, about 6.45am yesterday.The crash errupted in a fireball on the Eyre Highway. The 77-year-old was a frequent "Nullabor runner" and a popular member of the trucking and Smithfield community.

"He was a good bloke and he looked after them and they looked after him," witness Ashley McArdle said."A 25-year-old man from NSW and a 45-year-old man from Victoria in a second truck died at the scene," South Australia Police said in a statement.The highway was closed all day, with truckies urged to find accommodation overnight.

Truckies and other travellers were confronted by the horror scene, which is a busy freight route from Adelaide to Perth."All of those first on the scene or nearby, like I stopped to get in the phone range to get the calls out and the blokes down the road near the accident tried to help while they could but there just wasn't much anyone could do."The highway reopened at 8pm last night.

"The Eyre Highway was closed for most of the day while Major Crash Investigators examined the scene but was reopened just after 8pm last night with a speed restriction in place," police said. "Motorists are advised that further delays are expected throughout the day with possible closures of the highway as both of the prime movers and trailers are recovered from the scene."
