A father and son, and a boat skipper, have been killed after a fishing vessel overturned near Port Lincoln off South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. A search and rescue operation started on Monday evening after the fishing boat with five passengers failed to return. On Tuesday morning, police located an upturned boat near Spilsby Island in the Spencer Gulf. Nearby they found Danny Eckert, 44, and his 13-year-old son who had been clinging onto a reef for 10 hours.

The bodies of two people were found in the same area hours later, and the body of a third person found Tuesday afternoon. South Australian Police said the fishing boat was hit by a large wave at about 4pm on Monday, but no distress call was made. Those killed have been identified as Danny Eckert’s brother, Tom Eckert, and their father, Paul Eckert. The boat’s operator, who is yet to be identified, was also killed.
