Child sex abuse survivors who signed away their rights to take any more legal action, were short-changed on compensation pay-outs and often agreed to stay silent about their abuse can now apply to have those agreements overturned

Thousands of victims of child sex abuse in Victorian institutions are being offered a second chance at justice.

One leading victims’ lawyer said the reform would change everything for many victims, some of whom were sent away with pay-outs of as little as $5000 by churches who held all the legal advantages in a system stacked against survivors. It is unclear how many survivors might be cleared to sue their abusers under the reform but one compensation scheme, the Catholic Church’s controversial “Melbourne Response” is thought to have signed up more than 500 victims to deeds of release.

On average, survivors of child sexual abuse take about 22 years to report the crimes committed against them, usually putting them outside the legal time limits, which have now been abolished, to sue their abusers, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found. Settlements were commonly conditional on deeds of release, which were often signed by people who had not taken legal advice. The government says that allowing the courts to set aside these deeds if it is “just and reasonable” ensures victim survivors are not left worse off.

Domestic violence survivors more likely to be evicted from social housingWomen who suffer violence at home are being categorised as a 'nuisance' and some get evicted because of the abuse they suffer, according to new research. Here's another perspective: If a man is ordered to do a DV course so should the woman. Effective communication is two way and learned. Substance misuse can make women antagonistic & provocative. While an uneducated male with substance issues uses his fists instead of words. And men? Men who are victims are pushed aside and labelled as ‘not manly’. I’m a victim. Domestic violence is caused by both genders and both are as equally bad as each other. Stop segregating
