Whether it be racing ferries, aerial acrobatics and 21-gun salutes or simply hosting some friends for a barbie, official and impromptu events marking Australia Day will be close at hand today.

In Sydney, the harbour is the focal point, with the annual Ferrython ferry races from Fort Denison to Shark Island, a Tall Ships race and an Australia Day Regatta featuring more than 100 boats.

Big guns fire a salute at 12:15pm at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance as the Royal Australian Air Force aerobatics display team, the Roulettes, begin an aerial display above the city.Among Adelaide's more memorable events today are Weet-Bix-eating and thong-throwing contests at Carisbrooke Park in Salisbury.
