Paula Thornton travelled through 20 countries in 14 months, relying on hand gestures and silences to navigate through the various cultures.

As a child Ms Thornton assumed all people used sign language to communicate, as this was the only language in her household.

"When I was about six years old I realised there were people out there that don't use their hands to communicate because I had hearing family members that could sign," she said. "I thought everybody used Auslan, so [as a child] I missed out on nothing, I had access to language, I had access to communication [and] to the Deaf community.""Most Deaf people come from hearing families, they would be exposed to everybody learning and speaking in English, and their family members may not learn how to sign."

It wasn't until she learnt that Auslan wasn't used as widely beyond her home that Ms Thornton found learning to communicate isolating. "It felt like a huge barrier was built; [people] wanted me to speak but I couldn't hear my voice and I wasn't comfortable using my voice.

Pretty pointless to try to talk to people who speak different languages anyway...but she's a woman so YAY

The language app Drops added ASL to their visual learning recently. I asked that they expnd to Auslan etc. I'd love to learn it but have trouble with languages. If anyone can tell me about the grammar please send me a PM!

So did a lot of early explorers

Try doing it as a man... ( I don't mean women should dress as men or transition ). I once got beaten up for not talking to someone in the bathroom...

Another argument for open boarders

Unless there are court orders forbidding this, a parent can take their child wherever they want. 19,000 members? Wow that's pretty mainstream, vindicates the call for an inquiry.

Greta ‘not surprised’ by Trump’s tweetGreta Thunberg says she wasn’t surprised by Donald Trump’s sarcastic response to her impassioned speech on climate change this week. Call her what ever. It's clear she got right under Trumps & a lot of others skin as well. If she is being used as a pawn in the chess game of life, it's clear she upgraded into the Queen rather fast. Bloody hilarious she has ruffled so many. A mentally ill teen crushing adults. The greatest actress since Meryl Streep. 👏👏👏 So young to be suffering from TDS.
