In the 30 years that I’ve lived in Australia the federal Labor Party has only won an election from opposition once, back in 2007.
But it’s worth considering the parallels between this campaign and the campaign between John Howard and Kevin Rudd. In both instances Labor was and is competing against a government that had been in power for about a decade and failed to articulate a cohesive vision for the future of the country. In both instances Labor was and is relatively united behind a leader who has significant authority to shape the nature of the campaign and Labor’s policy platform.
Don’t get me wrong, Rudd was no socialist firebrand. On the contrary, he portrayed himself as a fiscal conservative who would maintain a steady-as-she-goes approach on big economic questions. But he did deftly identify big social and political fault lines that had emerged across the country and devised policies to exploit them.
Despite stagnating wage growth and an increase in more precarious casual and contract work, industrial relations has barely featured in this campaign. When it comes to helping those who are unemployed both Labor and the Coalition are on a unity ticket to keep the JobSeeker rate at its current level, with Labor even abandoning its lukewarm proposal of a review., and both support the opening of new coal and gas mines.
