A decade after being unseated, Jose Ramos-Horta is headed for a return to East Timor’s presidential palace, from where he will be charged with resolving the country’s bitter political feud.

“The results don’t surprise me and my main supporters, given the level of support given to my campaign in the whole country and our own polls in the last few months, even at township level,” he told Portuguese news agency Lusa. East Timor President Francisco “Lu Olo” Guterres casts his vote in the presidential run-off on Tuesday.Casting his vote, Ramos-Horta had said “people in East Timor want a new leader to solve the economic problems in this country”.One of East Timor’s historic independence figures, he was backed in his campaign against Fretilin’s Guterres by former guerrilla leader Xanana Gusmao, himself a former prime minister and East Timor’s first president.

The government has, however, operated without an annual budget, relying on monthly instalments from its sovereign petroleum fund, and is regarded as illegitimate by Xanana.
