Given how often Mack Horton had found himself at the centre of major international sporting incidents, simultaneously engaging and enraging millions of voices across two heavyweight Olympic nations, it was oddly poetic that the lowest moment of his swimming career was greeted with thunderous silence.
“I left the pool and was thinking, ‘What do I do with my life now? This could be all over’,” Horton says. “None of my family were there. We had a big house booked for everyone to stay, and it was just me, alone, in this big house. I was like, ‘Do I start looking for a job? It’s time for a desk job and let’s call it a day’.“I got about two hours of sleep – I just kept turning everything over – then I had the 200m heat the next day. Then it was just desperation.
Before that transformative utterance, which turned his life and that of his family upside down, he was a distance prodigy hailed as the second coming of Kieren Perkins, only for the 1500m to be sacrificed for the 400m, a distance that would ultimately bring him Olympic glory and a world championship silver medal behind Sun in 2019.
Horton had made a commitment to be the consummate team player in Tokyo and pour his heart into a relay considered to be a genuine gold medal chance. Then he suffered another setback after he was floored by the second of his COVID vaccines. It really wasn’t going to be his Olympics.
