The new British prime minister was supposed to be enjoying a honeymoon period, but the Tories are already in meltdown. | Rob Harris | ANALYSIS

The most frightening thing for Liz Truss and, more importantly, 67 million Britons is that things are likely to get much worse before they get any better.

The turmoil from the UK government’s decision to dramatically cut taxes through borrowing has sent shockwaves through global markets, sparking big swings in the United States and European bonds. MPs and party members convened on Sunday in Birmingham, where Truss is seeking to rally their support for her political vision. She says the nation can’t continue on the current trajectory of managed decline. Instead, it must take a new direction, and she says she’s the person to lead it down that path to “a better future”.The one bit of good news came on Friday when the Office for National Statistics revealed the UK economy grew 0.

It also pushed banks into withdrawing mortgage deals because of the interest rate chaos that followed. In the coming weeks interest rates will be pushed higher, meaning millions more families will be crunched. The precarious state of the National Health Service has had less attention of late, but a likely uptick in coronavirus and flu cases as the cold sets in – with mass staff shortages – could push it to the brink.
