ANALYSIS: The three arguments that make drug testing for welfare seem fair

the proposal infringes human rights, which all Australians have a right to receive. This includes the right to social security, privacy, an adequate standard of living, and the right to equality and non-discrimination.You don't lift people out of poverty by taking away their rights. There is no evidence drug testing of welfare recipients either improves employment outcomes or reduces harms associated with drug taking.

This may mean the critics need to mount effective arguments against paternalism, contractualism and communitarianism.

A bad opinion, ideology only, there is no argument against the fact that this is set out to and does uphold the long cultured tradition of the lnp to demonise Newstart recipients . The lnp have led a change to the word “welfare” to include unemployment, pensioners, etc.

Calls are there to increase newstart, so do it and make it conditional to passing drug test. Incentivise it !!!! Me: 10yrs on n/st & in b/house($380fn) legal meds r the most abused esp pain meds. I could tell you every dodge in the book. Oops need go dose up😎😎😎

1. It is not their money 2. It is someone else's money 3. See 1 or 2

Great way to raise the crime rate, make the desperate even more desperate.

Imagine being so concerned with what people do in their private lives that you'd be willing to sift through their spit piss and shit just to find what they're doing.

I would rather see recipients forced to use welfare on rent, food, school etc. just as much money gets wasted on legal crap like alcohol and smokes.

It's only problematic use of any drug including alc, tobacco, pharmaceuticals etc that need be of concern. Testing +ve to THC cannabis doesn't mean it's a problem! Evidence says its a failed policy idea & waste of $. Spend it on voluntary & involuntary FREE community rehab beds.

Welfare is supposed to be temporary funding, as long as pensioners and those on legitimate disability aren't being tested i see no issue here. I step over drunks and drug addicts daily on my way to work, would be nice not to for a change.

Yes, put down the lowest in society. I'd rather see politicians alcohol and drug tested so that we, the public, can be confident that our politicians aren't drunk or coked off their heads in parliament.

Every 'pro' argument put forward so far is equally applied to all tax payer funded income, including politicians.

ABC readers get triggered with reasoned arguments

To borrow a phrase popular on social media: drug testing the unemployed is nothing more than virtue-signalling. I find it disappointing, but not surprising, that the Morrison gov't has apparently put this at the top of the list of issues Australia faces, so early in their term.

Where is the contractualism between the Politicians & the Taxpaying community? Their payments should be subject to No rorting & if you rort, you get penalised too & Not make up new laws to suit & advantage them! Drug testing Welfare recipients is a very complex issue!

Decriminalize the stuff.........the biggest crooks are authorities in the Public service. Kill the black market and we have control.

This is another argument for universal basic income, the cost of testing these recipients, could be better spent on rehab clinics, and education.

Three arguments for against : WE ARE ONE♥️

WORSE . Some lunatic tax payers actually believe in the work - ethic 😂 so brain washed they are actually jealous of the poor living on noodles . Now that’s serious brain washing .

✅ 3 Arguments? ✅ 1: The ⚖ Law ⚖ should be applied equally! ✅ 2: It's further 'Criminalising Unemployed 🇦🇺 Australians 🇦🇺'! ✅ 3: Except Machine based jobs like driving, drilling, grinding etc, White Collar Workers aren't seriously scrutinised about possible drug consumption!

They don’t need to experiment ; it’s all an act for YOU . They fully know the results already .its legalised torture of the poor . IN PLAIN SIGHT , while you convince yourself y are a good little citizen working like a moron all the days of your life . Like a work - ethic zombie

* courts ?

They fully know that stressing them with more stress will just make it worse. They fully know they will turn to even more crime. The poor & sick are used to make jobs for others .. perhaps you ? Do you work in police , course , jail ?

The whole debate is built on lies from the start . The govn fully knows that those on drugs are very small % & they know why on drugs . Drugs help those cope with the financial distress of living on $270 per week & without enough food . Shelter. They fully know all....

It’s a pointless argument because the govn is not doing it for the reasons they say they are. Any person who thinks the govn care are totally insane . Literally .

Do our politicians have drug and alcohol testing?

The cost of implementing it outweighs the benefit, raising the payments to welfare recipients and decriminalizing certain recreational drugs would give better results

The rich don’t mind welfare recipients on drugs being cut off. Their houses won’t be the ones being broken into by meth heads.
