Rain records tumbled to their lowest levels at more than half of the long-running weather stations within 200km of Sydney in the last three months of 2019.
The 89 weather stations are located in an area from Jervis Bay on the South Coast, Bathurst in the west and Nelson Bay north of Newcastle. The data collected goes back at least 20 years and up to 118 years in some places. 2019 was both the warmest and driest year on record in Australia, with a national average rainfall of just 277 mm, and temperatures 1.52 degrees above average.
“This year the winds have been predominantly westerly so, instead of bringing moist air from the ocean, very dry air from drought-affected areas inland is being funnelled over the mountains," Dr Gallant said.
