Opinion: I am tired of the political fight. I am tired of pretending to be brave. I am tired of having to defend the fact I am a woman. We all bear the responsibility for change

to leave Federal Parliament at the end of this term, my greatest hope was that by doing so I might help to support the change so desperately needed in politics in our nation.Nicolle Flint during question time at Parliament House.Women’s safety in politics is not just an issue for the government, or the Liberal Party or the National Party or the Labor Party or the Greens.

The creepy old male stalker who had started following me with his long-lens camera in December 2018 started turning up at the same time as GetUp, too. They would share and like each other’s social media posts. They turned up to events together that had not been advertised. The stalker trolled me online, as did regular “names” with GetUp, Labor and union links. Online trolling and abuse was constant.

Despite all this, I won, held my seat for a second term and tried to move past the things that had occurred. Two weeks after the 2019 election, I appeared on the ABC programFormer journalist Mike Carlton live tweeted, “Never have I admired Jimmy Barnes so much as tonight.

I have highlighted how unsafe I felt following the more serious instances of physical aggression, and that for the first time in my long career in policy and in journalism I feel targeted because I am a woman.holding Labor to account for their hypocrisy on this issue.Until Wednesday morning they had never acknowledged mine.

'I'm tired of pretending to be brave' this hits home. I know it has a finite shelf life. What am I going to do as I age? Take comfort in the fact I'm increasingly irrelevant maybe?

Get used to it. I have been fighting that fight for a lifetime. After a while it becomes second nature. You get to be like a man but prettier and smarter. Hang in.

You allow your local school to possess within its library a book that condemns women. You allow this without a breath of protest.

Shouldn’t be subject to sexist attacks but should be held accountable for antediluvian neoliberal RWNJ views. Flint referred in her maiden speech to, ''the modern day scourge of environmental and animal activism''. Respect?

Nicolle Flint has the luxury of being selective about what social issues she decides to go into bat for ..most people who suffer abuse have no such luxury . In fact her party and her vote have contributed to shockingly entrench social collapse. Auspol qt nicolleflint

Everyone has challenging issues, suck it up and get on with life ?

what has any politician done since Peter Baldwin?

oh sweety chill tough girl lol

My goodness. That sounds like a headline from Mama Mia.

It’s terrible what Flint endured. All political parties and organisations need to reevaluate and reform their strategies and tactics to ensure this level of bullying and harassment ceases.

🥱😴😴

It's a human rights issue

Sounds like her boss is a real cunt

I find it disingenuous to not distinguish between harassment and non-violent civil disobedience that aims to bring the climate emergency to attention of politicians.

Activism is not sexual harassment. Activism and protest against you and your extremist policies is not sexual harassment.

Pathetic. Makes light of the actual victims.

This is a sad story that both parties, union, employers and employees, need to take note. Nobody should leave for these reasons.

A very misleading headline. It has zero to do with women’s safety in Parliament. It’s a woman complaining she was target of AustralianLabor supporters who trolled, stalker & threatened her. All disgraceful. Shame on you SMH. You really are not much more than a rag now.

And, as usual, none of it is the Libs fault. Go now, let them deal with a by-election.

As a young man average looks with no money, no car I wasn't able to attract fems. That's another narrative but.... I had toughen up. There are rude bullying men/women. Bullies bully men! I don't know your complaints. But parliament full of huge egos which = bullying/sexism.

Good riddance to a horrible person. We are all better off.

Gallo_Ways Shame she couldn’t have spoken about the toxic culture in Morrison’s LNP G’ment before jumping ship! Shame she couldn’t of helped to support Miss Higgins after being allegedly raped in her workplace!! Shame she couldn’t have supported Rochelle from Alan Tudge! 🙄

I love the fact you're emotionally fatigued, keep fighting your a Titan. I was ok boomered by a lousy Millennial that didn't have the guts to protest. I said I'm proud to be a boomer both my parents were war veterans. My peers were the fist taken by AIDS. Fight the good fight.

Labor's fault - never the coalition

I am so tired. I must have been fast asleep when I strongly voted AGAINST: Extending Jobkeeper Implementing refugee protection Increasing Aboriginal land rights Increasing housing affordability Increasing restrictions on gambling Increasing scrutiny of asylum seeker management

Still laborsfault

This is never about defending yourself as a woman. This is about defending a corrupt and incompetent government refusing climate change action because of their donors. You got tired of defending it? Good riddance and don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

But it wasn’t above politics because your very next sentences in your speech were partisan. I have immense and unwavering sympathy and solidarity for your cause but you lost me when you made it a partisan attack.

Plagiarism of JuliaGillard's speech 🤪

'I am tired of pretending to be brave.' in parliament, Nicole Flint, Liberal Party Voted Strongly Against A Royal Commission into Violence and Abuse against People with Disability. A Federal Anti-Corruption Commission. Doctor-initiated medical transfers for asylum seekers.

Good riddance and don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

The Federal Government has not done anything to protect women in parliament , even after an inquiry

Shocking stats all Aussies need to seeThe kidnap and killing of 33-year-old Sarah Everard in London has reignited the conversation about women’s safety and male violence against women. Author left out a few questions, for example, how many male victims never report vs female, how much harassment = ‘he asked you out for a date’? But never fear as answers incoming You’re continuing the rhetoric...all about the victims. Seemingly also almost levelling that ‘men get assaulted too’. Start talking about WHO does the assaulting, sexual or physical. Let’s deal with that. Raise the heat in that! Liberal MP Nicolle Flint delivers tearful farewell speech as she calls for women's safety to 'be above politics'Outgoing federal government MP Nicolle Flint delivered an emotional farewell speech on the floor of Parliament while lamenting the harassment she endured over the course of her political career. Boo hoo. I like Albanese but I hope he is listening. He should do what ScottMorrisonMP would never do and reach out and apologise and promise that he will take steps to prevent such harassment Before I listen to women about violence, they can stop their violence against the foetus and stop the murders, then and only then will I lend an ear. Let women cease their violence, STOP shedding innocent blood.
