It was an outpouring of pain, anger and solidarity on an immense scale - Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians walking side-by-side in their tens of thousands for real and lasting change.

Tens of thousands of people have gathered at Black Lives Matter protests across Australia's regional and capital cities, calling for an end to violence against Indigenous people.

The passionate rallies were inspired by the ongoing protests across the United States over the death of George Floyd, who died while being arrested in Minneapolis. Demonstrators were told to stay home by the prime minister and authorities due to the risk of coronavirus, but they still took to the streets in large numbers to demand justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The nationwide demonstrations were overwhelmingly peaceful, aside from a confrontation in Sydney where police pepper sprayed a group of protesters. Aboriginal elders conducted a traditional smoke ceremony at the beginning of the Sydney rally at Town Hall. These women were among the thousands of people to march in SydneyProtesters carried signs with a powerful message for authorities and fellow Australians.Police on horseback monitor the crowd. One man, who was shouting"all lives matter", was taken away in handcuffs and later released.

I’m all for this uprising as I believe there is problem world wide. However, I can’t help but wonder if there was a more clever way to do it, considering the current climate. Completely aware there has been no community transmission in NSW for quite a few days...

White lives dont matter eh?

Real and lasting change never happens as long as it's driven by a conglomeration of genuine protestors , poor me table thumpers and those looking for a feel good moment. To change the world you need the support of those watching on and that comes from solidarity of ideas.

Try your best to change the hearts and minds of a systematically racist country.

JMcKenzie Did someone get their 'will' ripped from them under false pretenses? You could bet your house or land on it. All of us first crap coming from a crypto-marxist Ivory Tower.

This race card play should be stopped as they are just pushing more white supremacist groups to recruit more people by showing that these protesters only speak up when its about criminals being treated harshly

And then new Police pepper sprayed them at Central Station as they tried to get home. Totally unacceptable and obscene. Who authoritarised that brutality ? And WHY? are nsw police a law into themselves?

Immense , 15,000 people out of about 5 million in Sydney

Cut them all off the dole. No more handouts. They want to go it alone?, fine ? If they want their own nation then we demand their unconditional surrender immediately or we reopen hostilities.

Peaceful BLM protests in Australia today

You left out stupidity

Scum

Not really that immense, if you think about it.

Something new for the media to focus on after 3 months of COVID 19. I sincerely hope things change. It has been shown time and time again, shoulder to shoulder etc etc until the media focuses on the next news.

They don't realise how good they have it in Australia. Wake up.

That’s opinion, not news.

'...on an immense scale' ? lol

An insult to every taxpayer & every decent Aussie. The Oz gov't blows 33 billion dollars annually on our protected species. The real numbers are almost double. What we see here is just grievance theatre, adding insult to injury. What 'real & lasting change?' Rule over us? 😎

Ah, shut up. Black lives are no different to white lives. This is fake news.

Change ? Will it change high rates of indigenous domestic violence, child rape , alcoholism? . No it won’t . I guess only some black lives matter to these virtue signalling selfish protesters .

Real and lasting change.......sure so what was the outcome?

2 weeks after.... let's wait for the 2 weeks after covid numbers.
