Opinion: As European nations shut down to halt the spread of coronavirus, Australians need to trust their Prime Minister to tell us the unvarnished truth - and he needs to trust us | mrseankelly

I am in Switzerland right now. Because of time zones and deadlines I am writing this on Saturday and early Sunday morning. Columnists always face the risk that events will overtake their precious observations. But the problem is rarely this acute.

That porousness is true in relation to people, but just as strikingly, in the current moment, it is true of information. And here we come to what needs to change, and perhaps what Prime Minister Scott Morrison will find most difficult.Every one of us is taking information from everywhere, and at a time when a single phenomenon affects us all. We are watching as different plans are rolled out in China, in Britain, in New Zealand.

My sense is we are still willing to listen to those in authority. Even from Switzerland, I am paying most attention to what the Australian government says. But that will only remain the case if our leaders take us into their thinking, more than they ever have before. When we’re told the government has received advice, we must be told the reasons behind that advice. And not just some reasons – the actual reasons. For example, we keep hearing that this or that response is “proportionate”.

Scott Morrison has shown glimpses of this ability, especially early on. But in the past week a vague sense of chaos crept in. He compared coronavirus to a “bad flu”, which gave the wrong idea. He said he’d go to the footy, then said he wouldn’t, with confusing reasons offered for each. Other developments, not his fault, didn’t help, notably the Grand Prix debacle.

mrseankelly Bollocks. Too late. I’m only trusting my state premier now. Morrison is a proven liar.

mrseankelly Even if he started telling us the unvarnished truth I would be unable to trust him. He has lied too often for trust

mrseankelly Trust? Trust is damaged. I’m only listening to AMA

domknight Trust is earned. Scott Morrison lies. He lies all the time. That's what he does. scottmorrisonlies

mrseankelly Will the media get a grip - we have had weeks of you all whining ''we have to be draconian morons because the ''experts'' don't know much about this small mutation of an old common virus'' and now you say we should listen to scottyfrommarketing?
