Barnaby Joyce has been given that most rare of things in public life - a second chance - he would be wise not to waste it. | OPINION auspol BarnabyJoyce

This is an important life lesson. But recognising that your actions have consequences for others is something most should have soaked up by puberty. Even more so if your life’s plan is to have a hand in running the nation, because the consequences for others carries a lot more heft than, say, deciding to be an accountant.

To be authentic is to live by what you profess to believe. In his three years in the wilderness Joyce should have contemplated how he has measured up on that front. Does he genuinely believe his fall was due to the weight of his own actions or does he think himself a victim? In a free society no one forces anyone to profess any kind of faith or sign up to any ideology. But if you do plant your flag on a hill you should expect that people will judge you by measuring your deeds against your words.

At school, and at Mass, he would have often heard Christ’s injunction that he do to others that which he would have done to himself. He would have learnt of the high value placed on constancy, prudence and temperance. It is not an easy path, but it is one that a host of the humble faithful have built worthy, decent lives on.

Any path to redemption must begin with being honest with yourself. And the long way back demands a life that bears witness to your beliefs. That is being authentic.
