ANALYSIS: The intriguing mechanics of 'sex scandals' work differently for women in power

John Della Bosca, who resigned after an affair. Former Labor leader Luke Foley, who resigned after sexual harassment allegations. Former Labor premier Nathan Rees, who left Parliament after allegations of an affair with a constituent. David Campbell, former NSW transport minister, who resigned after a TV network exposed his extra-marital visits to a sex club. Troy Buswell in WA, who resigned after sniffing a woman's recently vacated chair .

This is the intriguing mechanics of "sex scandals" in Australian politics; for men, the assumption is that they've outsourced their thinking to a crucial organ. For women, it's assumed they've outsourced it to the bloke. During and after her time in office, Julia Gillard — the only Australian prime minister to have been blessed with a personalised exit royal commission into her private life — faced questions about a long-ago relationship with her own Daryl, whose name was Bruce.

ElaineM11584892 Oh seriously! A woman doesn’t know right from wrong?

This is NOT a sex scandal, it’s a corruption scandal. No one gives a flying who she sleeps with. We care she turned a blind eye to corruption and made sure she had plausible deniability. What is wrong with you people?

Sex Scandal? Thats a first, is ABC starting some kind of witch hunt. So now just because she is a woman she got away lightly. Ridiculous!!!

. Bad editor! This headline title is not the premise of Annabelle Crabbe's article. And it isn't the headline from the ABC News app which reads 'Analysis: Why the 'poor Gladys blinded by love' defence doesn't stack up.' And that, Miss Gender Bias, is the true premise.

It's not a sex scandal it's a corruption scandal.

But this not a sex scandal. This is a matter of lack of integrity by the NSW Premier by engaging and continuing to engage with a person who resigned from Parliament following adverse findings.

Was the relationship sexual? And if it was, what is so scandalous about 2 unattached grownups in a consenting relationship? The supposed scandal isn't about sex, it's about political corruption. Once again ABC creates its own story. theirABC DefundTheABC FakeNewsMediaClowns

Thanks Annabel - good stuff. Next series: “Back in time for sinner”, maybe?

It’s not a sex scandal.

There is no sex scandal There is only perjury and corruption

It's only a 'sex scandal' because the media as a whole is choosing to focus on the relationship rather than the corruption.

If my I kept hearing stories of one of my staff doing things that could fall foul of a code of conduct I would check it was all declared. If I did not for my partner that would be corrupt in my world.

Stand by you Gladys.

There is no sex scandal! There is a 'failure to declare her partners financial and business interests and let him use her office for business deals' scandal. Those two things are the issue. Even without corruption or bribes. That is enough for her to go.

Why is the ABC waving the flag for Gladys?

It is not intriguing. It is just the ‘thinking man’s’ slut-shaming.

No one cares about the sex! People care about the corruption

Don't care about the sex - it's the corruption, or if we're being generous, the acceptance / tolerance / ignoring of and failure to do anything about corruption that's the problem. But maybe that's just me?
